Huge black holes are firing powerful beams of particles into space and then changing their aim to fire at new targets. This discovery, made using NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF) National Radio Astronomy Observatory's (NRAO) Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA), shows what kind of widespread impact black holes can have on their surrounding galaxy and beyond.
A team of astronomers examined 16 supermassive black holes, analyzing their activity and directional shifts over millions of years. Using data from the Chandra X-ray Observatory and VLBA, the team studied the directions of beams - known as jets - emitted by these black holes. This gives scientists an accurate picture of current beam directions as seen from Earth.
Additionally, by studying pairs of cavities created in hot gas by these beams, scientists could identify the past directions of the emitted beams, millions of years before. It was noted that roughly one-third of the beams shifted their directions drastically, some by nearly 90 degrees over periods ranging from a million to tens of millions of years.
The study reveals that these rapid changes are significant, relative to the black holes' age of approximately 10 billion years. These findings indicate a dynamic and often chaotic history for these colossal cosmic entities.
Gravitational Dynamics and Energy Output
The gravitational pull of black holes draws in material, forming a spinning disk around them. Some of this material is ejected in the form of beams, or jets, aligned with the black hole's rotation axis. These beams impact star formation within galaxies since their energy injection into surrounding hot gas prevents it from cooling and forming new stars.
Interestingly, if these beams alter direction substantially, they could suppress star formation across broader galaxy regions. This dynamic has profound implications for the life cycles and evolution of galaxies.

Comparing the Chandra and VLBA data, astronomers inferred the beams' historical directions. By analyzing the large outer cavities created by earlier beams, researchers linked these to current beam orientations. The emission from black holes and the voids they create in surrounding material are crucial in understanding star formation. When the beams shift direction, they inject energy into different regions, potentially preventing star formation on a wider scale.
