Boxing Legend George Foreman Dies At 76

A revered champion, businessman, and humanitarian, Foreman's legacy lives on in sports and beyond.

The sporting world is mourning the death of boxing icon and Olympic gold medallist George Foreman. Foreman’s family confirmed the 76-year-old died peacefully in his sleep on Friday, March 21, 2025. “Our hearts are broken. With profound sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved George Edward Foreman Sr. who peacefully departed on March 21, 2025 surrounded by loved ones,” the statement said. Foreman lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose. A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, Foreman is remembered fondly by those who knew him.

Foreman won gold in the heavyweight division at the 1968 Olympics before turning professional the following year. He quickly rose through the ranks, capturing the heavyweight title in 1973 with a stunning second-round knockout of the then-undefeated Joe Frazier. This victory marked the pinnacle of Foreman's early career, showcasing his incredible power and skill.

However, Foreman’s journey was not without its struggles. After successfully defending his title twice, he met Muhammad Ali in the iconic Rumble in the Jungle in 1974. Ali had been stripped of his crown for refusing to be drafted into the Vietnam War and came into the match a heavy underdog against the bigger, younger champion. For seven rounds, Ali lay against the ropes, enduring Foreman’s powerful punches, before turning the tables and knocking him out in the eighth round. This defeat devastated Foreman, and he took a year off from boxing to regroup.

After experiencing a second professional loss, Foreman retired in 1977 to become an ordained minister in the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ. He found solace in his faith, but the call of the ring would soon beckon him back. A decade later, at 315 lbs (143 kg), Foreman made a surprising comeback to the ring to raise money for a youth center he founding in Texas.

Incredibly, he won 24 consecutive matches, showcasing his resilience and determination. However, his return was not without challenges; he ultimately lost to Evander Holyfield in a 12-round decision in 1991. Yet, in an extraordinary twist of fate, Foreman knocked out the undefeated Michael Moorer in 1994, claiming the heavyweight title once again, thus becoming the oldest heavyweight champion in history at the age of 45.

Foreman retired for good in 1997 with a record of 76 wins, including 68 knockouts, and five losses. As a humanitarian and an Olympian, he was deeply respected in the boxing community. His family remembered him as a “force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy.”

In addition to his accomplishments in the ring, Foreman became a successful entrepreneur, particularly known for promoting the George Foreman Grill, which sold over 100 million units worldwide. This entrepreneurial venture earned him more revenue than his boxing career and turned him into an icon of success for many. Foreman married Mary Joan Martelly in 1985, and they remained together for the rest of his life. He had five sons, all named George, five daughters, and two adopted daughters, leaving behind a large and loving family.

Following the announcement of his death, tributes flowed in from everywhere. NBA champion Scottie Pippen stated, “Rest in peace, George Foreman. Your legacy lives on, champ.” Reflecting on Foreman’s multifaceted legacy, The Ring Magazine remarked, “Foreman is considered one of the greatest heavyweights of all time and will be remembered as an icon of the sport forever.”

Foreman’s passing marks the end of an era in heavyweight boxing. He always fought tirelessly to preserve his good name for his family and to honor his extraordinary life. While no cause of death has been announced, the impact he had on both the boxing world and beyond will undoubtedly endure.
