Niigata Leon Reflects On Emotional Kohaku Debut

The young Enka singer shares the joy of performing at a prestigious New Year event, highlighting family pride and support.

Niigata Leon, a rising star in the Enka music scene, recently reflected on a transformative moment in his young career during a guest appearance on the TOKYO FM+ radio show. Known for his heartfelt ballads, Leon made headlines when he performed at the prestigious NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen for the very first time in 2024.

Born in 1996 in Chiba Prefecture, Niigata Leon debuted in 2019 with the single 'Hanasanai Hanasanai', which quickly set the stage for a successful career. In 2020, he received the Best New Artist award at the 61st Japan Record Awards and followed that with another accolade in 2021, when he won the Best Enka/Popular Song New Artist award at the 34th Japan Gold Disc Awards.

Since then, he has consistently captured the hearts of fans across Japan. Leon’s recent hit single 'Zenbu Ageyou,' produced by Kosaku Kensuke and written and composed by George Tokoro, further solidified his place in the music industry. The song became an instant success in 2024, and its popularity was emphasized during his compelling performance at the Kohaku Uta Gassen, a highlight of Japan’s New Year celebrations.

During his recent talk on the radio show airing on February 28 and March 7, 2025, Leon couldn’t contain his excitement about being part of the revered Kohaku Uta Gassen. He expressed, “I have been saying for five years that I wanted to appear on Kohaku. Finally, with everyone’s support, I was able to achieve it.” This moment was not just about personal achievement for Leon; it was about sharing that achievement with his family.

Leon vividly recalled the emotional scene as he performed, revealing that it marked a proud moment for him and his family, especially for his father—a fellow Enka singer. “My father cried for the first time out of joy at seeing me perform on Kohaku,” he shared, indicating how significant this occasion was for both of them. Leon’s parents have always been part of his musical journey, although his mother was initially against him pursuing a singing career.

Reflecting on the moment, Leon mentioned, “Growing up, we all watched Kohaku together at New Year’s, and my father would always say how difficult it is to get to perform there.” This perspective made Leon's debut performance all the more meaningful, showcasing how much work and dedication went into achieving this milestone in his career.

In another heartfelt exchange with the radio show’s host, Kensuke Kinari, Leon spoke about the journey leading up to this moment. “Performing on Kohaku was like reaching my own ‘Koshien’,” referring to the Japanese equivalent of a high school baseball championship that symbolizes the pinnacle of achievement for young athletes. He added, “I did everything with the determination that this year, I would definitely perform on Kohaku.”

The emotional resonance of his performance was evident not just for Leon but also for the audience watching at home. “There were people who were happier for me than I was for myself,” he recalled. This sense of community and joy filled the air as he performed 'Zenbu Ageyou,' and it resonated deeply with the audience.

Leon’s performance also featured a moving conclusion, where Kinari and Tokoro joined him for the iconic 'Dogeza Sliding' pose, embodying the essence of the song. Leon felt overwhelmed to have the support of such established figures in the industry by his side during the performance. “The fact that they expressed the song physically and pushed me forward at the end was incredibly touching,” he noted, detailing how this visual embodiment of support was a perfect way to end the performance.

As impressive as his career trajectory has been, Leon reflected on how family dynamics played a significant role in shaping his career. His mother, who had previously been hesitant about him becoming a singer, has fully embraced his success, even referring to him as 'Leon-sama' now. This change in her attitude clearly showcases the pride she feels toward his achievements.

As the future unfolds for Niigata Leon, he continues to prepare for further achievements in the music world, buoyed by the affectionate support of his family, fans, and the industry. His story stands as a testament to perseverance, shifting family dynamics, and the unyielding importance of support in achieving one's dreams.
