Star-Studded David Di Donatello Awards Celebrate 70 Years

Elena Sofia Ricci and Mika host the prestigious ceremony honoring the best in Italian cinema

The 70th edition of the David di Donatello Awards is set to take place tonight, May 7, 2025, at the iconic Teatro 5 in Cinecittà, Rome. This prestigious event will be broadcast live on Rai 1 starting at 9:40 PM, showcasing the best of Italian cinema.

Hosted by the dynamic duo of Elena Sofia Ricci and pop star Mika, the ceremony promises to be a star-studded affair with numerous notable guests from both national and international cinema. Among the attendees are acclaimed actors such as Monica Bellucci, Emanuela Fanelli, and Lunetta Savino, alongside directors like Mario Martone.

This year, the Academy of Italian Cinema will present a total of 26 awards, including one for Lifetime Achievement, which will be awarded to the renowned director Pupi Avati. Avati, celebrated for his multifaceted contributions to cinema as a director, writer, and producer, has significantly shaped the landscape of Italian filmmaking.

Two Special Davids will also be presented during the ceremony: one to actress Ornella Muti, recognized for her extensive career in both Italian and international cinema, and another to Timothée Chalamet, a rising star known for his versatile performances.

Sean Baker's film, 'Anora', will receive the David for Best International Film, while Ferzan Özpetek's 'Diamanti' has been honored with the David dello Spettatore, awarded to the film that garnered the highest viewership in Italian theaters, totaling 2,222,126 viewers by February 28, 2025.

The nominations for this year’s awards were announced on April 7, 2025, with 'Berlinguer - La grande ambizione' and 'Parthenope' leading the pack, each receiving 15 nominations. Following closely are 'L’arte della gioia' and 'Vermiglio', with 14 nominations each.

Other films competing for the prestigious Best Film award include 'Il tempo che ci vuole' and 'Gloria!', which received 6 and 9 nominations respectively. A total of 24 films are in the running for various categories, showcasing a diverse array of talent and storytelling.

The David di Donatello Awards, established in 1950, have become synonymous with excellence in Italian cinema. The first ceremony took place on July 5, 1956, and since then, the awards have evolved to honor not only established filmmakers but also newcomers, contributing to the rich tapestry of Italian cultural heritage.
