Shigeaki Kato Makes Directorial Debut With Short Film SUNA

The new line-up of films from MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 7 showcases diverse storytelling and creative innovation from top directors.

Shigeaki Kato, famed as part of the popular music group NEWS, is making waves again with his directorial debut short film, part of the 'MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 7' project. Announced on January 24, 2025, this exciting new venture includes five films and promises to captivate audiences across Japan.

Among the standout offerings is Kato's film titled 'SUNA,' features his acting alongside Aぇ! group member Yoshiki Masakado. This 15-minute mystery film is set against the eerie backdrop of Tokai City, where incidents of people suffocated by sand have become disturbingly frequent. Kato describes the inspiration behind the film, saying, "I want to create stories revolving around the terrifying nature of things you think you don’t have, like sand. I feel there’s difficulty each day at determining what's wrong and what’s right." His aim appears to be to explore the complex relationships humans have with fear and perception.

The 'MIRRORLIAR FILMS' initiative, which started back in 2020, has become well known for its innovative approach to filmmaking. With contributions from celebrated filmmakers to new talents, the project aims to merge traditional cinema with fresh, independent voices. Kato's involvement marks his return to directing, following his previous work on the short film 'Shibuya to 1 and 0.'

Season 7 is set to showcase five unique films: 'KUTSUYA,' directed by Narushi Takeda, delves deep within the life of a novelist entangled with shady dealings; 'Victims,' humorously helmed by comedian Koji Kato, portrays the chaotic scenario of two couples trapped between parked cars. This project promises to entertain, as its amusing premise entails confrontations with intimidating characters.

Another noteworthy title is 'Human Error,' the directorial debut of actress Ayari Kazuki, which uses artificial intelligence as the central theme pivoting around one man's struggle and salvation. Lastly, 'Wedding,' directed by Sean Sakamoto, narrates the internal conflict of two fathers amid impending chaos as their country undergoes turmoil.

The screening of all five films is slated to begin nationwide starting May, prominently featuring at venues like Human Trust Cinema Shibuya, for two weeks. Kato and Masakado express palpable excitement over sharing their collaborative work with audiences, with Masakado reflecting, "This is my second time collaborating with Kato-kun, and I'm truly grateful for being part of this project as I show my growth as an actor."

Kato remains hopeful about audience reception, stating, "This film has the kind of tension you wouldn’t expect from just 15 minutes of runtime." He eagerly anticipates the interaction between the film and its viewers, wishing for them to connect deeply with the experience.

Through this endeavor, Kato is not just stepping behind the camera but is simultaneously honing his craft as both writer and director. His contributions to this array of short films indicate the potential for significant industry influence and renewed interest from viewers. According to Kato, "I hope viewers can find their own meanings within the story." But it’s apparent this collection offers more than just entertainment; it delves deeply within the realms of psychology and society.

Through creative narratives interwoven with pressing themes, Kato's debut and the subsequent shorts aim to engage audiences and spark dialogue, solidifying his place within the cinematic arts. With much anticipation building for May, 'MIRRORLIAR FILMS Season 7' is set to explore the unknown, offering us glimpses at what lies beneath the surface of our lives.
