Sales Decline And Performance Issues Plague PS5 Pro

Sluggish sales and underwhelming performance with Monster Hunter Wilds raise concerns for Sony's latest console.

The gaming market is witnessing significant fluctuations as the PlayStation 5 Pro, released just three months ago, struggles to maintain its momentum. According to industry analyst Mat Piscatella, sales of the PS5 Pro have fallen behind its predecessor, the PS4 Pro, marking concerning trends within the overall console market.

Piscatella, who serves as the executive director of games at the market research firm Circana, emphasized this decline through social media, stating, "PS5 Pro sales are now behind PS4 Pro sales..." This statement sheds light on the broader declines experienced across all major console platforms, with overall console spending down 35% year-on-year and video game hardware spending plummeting by 45% compared to the previous year.

Sales for the PS5 itself have witnessed a particularly steep drop of 38%, contrasting starkly with its competitors. Xbox Series consoles faced even tougher times, recording as much as a 50% decline. Interestingly, the Nintendo Switch experienced the most dramatic slowdown with its sales down 53%, stemming mainly from consumer anticipation of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.

This dip can be troubling for not just Sony, but for Microsoft as well. Although the strong initial sales of the PS5 Pro indicated healthy consumer interest, it increasingly appears to be losing its grip on the market. For some perspective, the PS4 Pro accounted for approximately 13% of the total lifetime sales of the PS4, enhancing its average sales price amid limited stock. Despite these positive signals, this data juxtaposes starkly against the PS5 Pro's current status.

With the asking price for the PS5 Pro established at $699.99 without extras, the hardware's steep cost has prompted commentators to question the sustainability of its sales. The potential for price adjustments looms as the PS5 Pro's decline may force Sony to reconsider its retail price strategy. Despite available discounts at various retailers, it remains to be seen whether these adjustments will effectively stimulate consumer interest.

On the performance front, the PS5 Pro's handling of game titles like Monster Hunter Wilds has sparked notable criticism. Reports by French outlet GamerSyde reveal the game struggles to maintain stable frame rates, leading to significant user frustration. The game forces players to toggle between different display modes, and even within these settings, it does not provide options to disable features like ray tracing, which may hinder performance even more.

For example, the 'Resolution' mode of Monster Hunter Wilds targets 30FPS but employs PSSR to upscale from 3072 x 1728p to 4K, yet it still fails to achieve consistent frame rates. The GamingSyde report raises concerns about incorrect frame pacing contributing to the inconsistent performance. This leaves many gamers puzzled, especially when they recognize the potential power of the PS5 Pro.

More frustration arises when examining the 'Balanced' mode, which returns to itself with similarly inconsistent frame rates. Even the 'Performance' mode, which theoretically should yield 60FPS, does so at the substantial cost of image quality. The trade-off is concerning, as the PSSR technology struggles with significant reductions from native resolution.

What has emerged from this early analysis is quite telling: the PS5 Pro requires updates before users can confidently engage with titles like Monster Hunter Wilds at the quality they expect from next-gen hardware. Looking forward, fluctuations were expected as the market adjusts, but the balance between price and performance will be integral to Sony’s approach to solidify the PS5 Pro's position.

Considering the current pace of PS5 Pro sales compared to the PS4 Pro, the future does appear uncertain. With challenges arising from high prices and uninspiring performance on key gaming titles, Sony must closely monitor these trends if it hopes to win back its consumers and reinvigorate sales volumes. Only time will tell if the PS5 Pro can overcome these hurdles and secure its footprint firmly within the gaming market.
