Romanian Border Police Process Thousands Amid Migration Surge

Recent operational statistics highlight border management efforts in response to increased migration from Ukraine.

On March 24, 2025, Romanian border police managed the influx of travelers and transport at Romania's external borders, processing around 51,500 individuals and more than 11,800 vehicles. This was a significant operation reflecting both the ongoing movement of people into and out of the country and the specific circumstances surrounding increased migration from Ukraine. Of the total people processed, 26,205 were entering Romania, accompanied by 6,098 vehicles.

The high volume of traffic is attributed, in part, to the continued humanitarian crisis and conflict in Ukraine. Since February 10, 2022, over 11.3 million Ukrainian citizens have crossed into Romania. Border control officials have adhered strictly to regulations guiding the passage of these individuals, who are seeking safety and asylum.

As part of ongoing efforts to streamline border processes, Romania notably eliminated border controls at its internal borders with Hungary and Bulgaria on January 1, 2025. This change allows travelers to move freely to and from these countries without the need to stop for travel document checks, which marks a significant shift in Romania's border policy, aligning it more closely with the regulations set forth by the Schengen area.

Despite the lift on internal checkpoint controls, Romanian border police retain the authority to conduct random checks within a 30-kilometer zone from the external border. This area is designated for ensuring compliance with laws while also monitoring for any potential illegal activities. In recent attempts to enforce these regulations, border police have been particularly vigilant, processing over 9,100 checks via the electronic application known as eDAC in just the past 24 hours.

During this recent operational period, Romanian border police identified 100 illegal activities, comprising 21 offenses and 79 contraventions. This has resulted in fines amounting to 42,400 lei, alongside the seizure of goods valued over 94,300 lei, which were deemed unsafe for sale. These measures underscore the authorities' commitment to consumer protection and law enforcement.

Interestingly, among the individuals who attempted to cross Romania's borders, 14 foreign nationals were denied entry due to not meeting the legal criteria set forth by Romanian law. Additionally, 2 Romanian citizens were barred from leaving the country for various legal reasons, showcasing the ongoing challenges border officials face in balancing legal statutes with migration dynamics.

Romanian border police remain steadfast in their responsibilities to facilitate smooth transit for travelers while also standing firm against illegal activities that threaten the rule of law. They collaborate closely with other law enforcement branches, including local police and immigration services, to maintain border security and public safety.

The Romanian border police continue to prioritize enhancing the travel experience for citizens and visitors, ensuring that all measures are in place to provide assistance in various situations that travelers may encounter. Effective communication tools, such as the 'Trafic on-line' application, allow individuals to access real-time information regarding wait times at border crossing points, simplifying their travel plans.

With the ongoing geopolitical situation in neighboring countries such as Ukraine, the Romanian authorities remain alert and responsive, adapting policies and practices to address the dynamic nature of border security in the region while upholding their obligations to protect both nationals and foreigners passing through their territory.

As Romania navigates these complexities, the border police's proactive measures highlight the delicate interplay between safety, security, and humanitarian response within Europe's evolving migration landscape.
