Piastri Wins GP China As McLaren Celebrates 50th Double Victory

Brake issues for Norris shadow McLaren's historic win in Shanghai as investigations loom for several drivers.

In an exhilarating showdown that highlighted both triumph and tension, Oscar Piastri clinched victory at the GP of China on March 23, 2025, marking his third career win in Formula 1. The McLaren driver started from pole position and delivered a flawless performance, eventually crossing the finish line ahead of his teammate Lando Norris, who faced significant brake issues throughout the race. This win signifies not only personal success for Piastri but also a historic moment for McLaren as it celebrated its 50th double victory in F1, the first since 2011 on this very circuit.

As the race unfolded, Lando Norris described his gripping brake challenges as "frightening." He remarked, "It’s my worst nightmare. If I have a nightmare, it’s the brakes failing." During the closing laps, he lost between two to four seconds due to these persistent brake problems but managed to finish the race, albeit unable to apply pressure on his teammate. "But we survived and made it to the end," he reflected, relieved yet concerned. Norris's ability to maintain composure amidst these troubles helped secure McLaren's remarkable finish.

The race, however, was not without controversy. Following a practice start that violated race director instructions, four drivers including Nico Hülkenberg, Yuki Tsunoda, Alexander Albon, and Gabriel Bortoleto received warnings. The race management opted for warnings over penalties since the violations did not endanger anyone. Yet, investigations are pending regarding this incident.

Meanwhile, Australian driver Jack Doohan accumulated four penalty points across the weekend due to a collision with Bortoleto and pushing fellow driver Hadjar off the track. His aggressive driving raised eyebrows during the event and indicated an ongoing concern with maintaining control.

Toto Wolff, team principal for Mercedes, expressed satisfaction with a podium finish but acknowledged the gap to McLaren. "We’re happy with P3. Our maximum today was to finish on the podium, but we’re still a long way from the lead," he noted. Wolff mentioned that McLaren had a slight edge, estimated at two-tenths of a second. "Considering our car didn’t function well on Friday, we’ve made a significant step forward. Getting two-tenths back is possible in future races," he added optimistically.

In contrasting fortunes, Kimi Antonelli suffered underbody damage, which cost him vital time during the race. Wolff identified that the damage likely cost him four to five tenths of performance. "There was no way he could get further today," assessed Wolff.

Shifting focus to Red Bull, Liam Lawson's position appears precarious following early season struggles, as discussions on possibly replacing him with teammate Tsunoda surface before the upcoming race in Suzuka. Red Bull is weighing its options carefully but no decision has been finalized.

Oscar Piastri, ecstatic about his performance, remarked on the surprising behavior of the tires compared to previous days. "It was an incredible weekend from start to finish. Today, the tires acted much better than we anticipated," he said, expressing his hope to challenge for the driver's championship in the remaining races. His confidence was evident as he celebrated another grand prix victory.

On the other hand, Max Verstappen finished fourth, with his team principal Helmut Marko stating, "The race was lost with our first set of medium tires. If we’d had a better start and hadn’t lost positions, we could have reached the podium." He noted that in the second stint, they performed comparably to front runners.

Finally, amidst the backdrop of these races and strategic considerations, the FIA confirmed its examination of possible future engine concepts including the return of V10 engines powered by sustainable fuel, a change that reflects the sport’s evolving environmental commitments.

The day's challenges and achievements were encapsulated in another thrilling chapter of Formula 1, where the drivers consistently push the limits both on and off the track.
