Ukrainian Model Discovered After Mysterious Disappearance In Dubai

Maria Kovalchuk, 20, raises concerns over women's safety in UAE after her severe injuries following a week-long search.

A Ukrainian model, Maria Kovalchuk, 20, was found nearly lifeless beside a road in Dubai on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, after being missing for more than a week. Kovalchuk may have fallen from a significant height at a construction site, which could explain her severe injuries. Authorities state that she had informed her friends and family about a hotel party invitation from two men claiming connections to the modeling industry on March 9, 2025.

Upon her discovery, Kovalchuk lacked any identification and was quickly rushed to the hospital, undergoing four life-saving procedures. Reports from Dubai police confirmed the grim circumstances surrounding her injuries, stating, "Dubai police confirm that a Ukrainian citizen who was previously reported missing is currently hospitalized and receiving medical care in the presence of her family. The investigation revealed that she sustained serious injuries after entering a restricted construction site alone and falling from a height.”

While this explanation implies a tragic accident, Kovalchuk's family harbors suspicions of foul play, suggesting that she may have been a victim of modern slavery. Initial investigations indicated that the model may have been involved in illegal adult work, specializing in extreme fetishes. According to the Telegram channel Mash, it is believed that Kovalchuk was drawn into this world through high-paying parties known for their sordidness, where women can earn up to $30,000.

Some reports assert that the gruesome reality includes extreme abuse, with women potentially encountering dangerous situations where severe acts of violence are inflicted. Lawyer Katya Gordon expressed concern, saying, “There are videos circulating where sheiks allegedly beat girls, cut their hair, and do all sorts of other things to them.” This dark underbelly of the party scene in Dubai is gaining traction, drawing attention to the vulnerabilities faced by women.

Though many who know Kovalchuk refute claims of her participation in such parties, evidence has surfaced suggesting she maintained an online profile offering adult services, even having struggled with substance addiction. This duality raises troubling questions about her involvement and personal circumstances leading to her tragic fate. Her mother, Anna, noted, "She cannot comment because of the investigation" and expressed her concern, “We all hope for the best and are very grateful to everyone who took part in the search and helped with information.”

Kovalchuk had reported celebrating her 20th birthday at a party, reportedly attended by sheikhs, just before her disappearance. She contacted her mother on March 10, sharing that she had been spending time with the two men, despite previously planning a trip to Thailand few days later. After she failed to board her flight on March 11, her family reported her missing, leading to her unfortunate discovery eight days later.

As the investigation evolves, many details remain murky. Eyewitness and friend Angelina Doroshenkova, who was also invited to the party but returned to Russia, expressed, “We all hope for the best and are very grateful to everyone who took part in the search and helped with information.” The urgency to find clarity in Kovalchuk’s circumstances is palpable as friends and supporters rally around her.

With the case drawing international attention, Radha Stirling, CEO of Detained in Dubai, noted that the UAE's supposedly crime-free image is misleading. "Dubai is relentlessly marketed as a safe, glamorous, crime-free destination, but for many women, the reality has been one of trauma, injustice, and silence." Stirling’s observations around issues of violence and injustice facing women in the region highlight a disturbing pattern that appears to evade official crime statistics.

Cases like that of Maria Kovalchuk are reminders of the vulnerabilities women face, particularly in places where societal norms and legal frameworks can overlook serious crimes. “This cannot continue. The UAE must be held accountable for whitewashing its reputation while sweeping serious crimes under the rug,” Stirling added. Until protections for women improve, and until accountability is enforced for perpetrators, many continue to live in fear.

As Kovalchuk remains hospitalized and is expected to recover, there’s a collective hope that she will regain her voice to reveal what happened during those harrowing days. For her family, friends, and the broader community, her journey to recovery may become a rallying cry for change—a hope for justice amid a landscape where safety and abuse coexist in a precarious balance.
