Registration for the 2024 Nijmegen Four Days Marches officially opened today at 10:00 AM, inviting thousands of walking enthusiasts to secure their spots for this renowned event.
This year marks the 107th edition of the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, which is one of the largest multi-day walking events worldwide. With 47,000 starting spots available, the registration process is divided for strategic management. The first window is open from now until March 7, allowing walk participants who have finished the event at least once since 2005, as well as youths born between 2007 and 2014, to register.
The second phase of registration will commence on March 10 and will be open to all interested parties until June 13. “But until now, we've never experienced all tickets being sold out during the first registration period,” noted one spokesperson for the event, indicating the growing trend of participation year by year.
Last year, the event recorded 7,700 remaining spots post-first registration, showcasing the increasing interest. Various factors contribute to this popularity, including improved training programs and the chance to experience the vibrant atmosphere of Nijmegen.
"We try to give these new walkers a safe feeling, as the event can be overwhelming," said Bart Putman, who serves as both a coach and as an experienced participant. His valued program, Via Vierdaagse, helps debutantes prepare for what they can expect during both the event's commencement and conclusion.
Within the registrations, 2,000 spots for the Via Vierdaagse had already been claimed hours before the official opening, selling out within just 80 minutes. Newcomers like Irene van der Reijden, who recently moved back to Nijmegen, expressed her excitement saying, "I don't know what the 4Daagse all entails, but it seems like a fantastic experience to participate and walk around the city."
To increase accessibility, the Nijmegen Four Days Marches organization has also implemented stricter guidelines this year for those transferring their start numbers. "We are tightening the guidelines for ticket transfers to make it fairer," stated Babs Rijke, emphasizing equitable treatment for all participants. It was previously the case where being awarded any merit could guarantee access to the first registration, but now, those who finished before 2005 will have to wait longer.
Registration fees for this year's event are set at €120, reflecting a slight increase of 4.35% from the previous year. Event organizers reiterate the importance of adhering to registration requirements, as fairness remains at the forefront of this storied walking event.
Overall, the Nijmegen Four Days Marches, taking place from July 15 to 18, continues to draw attention and excitement among both seasoned walkers and newcomers alike. Participants are encouraged to sign up as soon as possible to secure their chance at this cherished event.
