Milano-Sanremo 2025 Set For Epic Showdown As Key Cyclists Prepare

As legendary racers contend with injuries and recent performance, the stage is set for an unforgettable race.

The cycling world is buzzing in anticipation as the 116th edition of Milano-Sanremo gears up to take place on Saturday, March 22, 2025. Riders will once again set off from the historic center of Pavia, finishing nearly 289 kilometers later on the iconic Via Roma. Known affectionately as 'La Primavera,' this race represents not only a herald of spring but also the longest and one of the most unpredictable disputes in cycling, categorized as a Monument race.

Bahrain Victorious has carved out a niche in the history of this event, claiming two thrilling victories since joining the World Tour in 2017. Notably, Vincenzo Nibali took the title in 2018, followed by Matej Mohorič's victory in 2022. Mohorič, who has made a mark in past editions by finishing in the top ten in five of his eight starts, finds himself among the key contenders once again this year. However, he acknowledges a challenging lead-up to the race. "I wasn’t at 100% during Opening Weekend and then got sick just before Strade Bianche. Hopefully, I’ve recovered in time for the first Monument of the season," he stated, indicating both his determination and the hurdles he’s faced.

Training sessions have sparked optimism in Bahrain Victorious’ camp. Franco Pellizotti, the team’s sports director, provided insight into Mohorič's preparedness: "Matej has faced a tough few weeks, but his last training sessions have shown that he has recovered well. That’s important for his confidence," he shared. As they prepare for the race, Pellizotti emphasized the unpredictability that defines Milano-Sanremo, where even seasoned champions, such as Tadej Pogačar, have yet to claim victory.

Breaking down the race, its decisive moments are concentrated in the final kilometers. The journey through Turchino, at 136 kilometers into the race, serves as a build-up to the critical climbs: Capi (Mele, Cervo, and Berta), followed closely by the formidable Cipressa and Poggio climbs. "The most critical point remains the Cipressa. It’s essential to be at the front, especially if the weather is bad," Pellizotti added, illustrating the race's tactical nature. The weather forecast looks promising, which may favor aggressive strategies as participants assess their chances as they near the finish.

Alongside Mohorič, Bahrain Victorious' lineup encapsulates a blend of experience and fresh talent, positioning themselves for various race scenarios. Fred Wright, riding in great form from his recent Paris-Nice participation, could serve as a crucial component if the race ends in a sprint. The team also includes debutants Kamil Gradek and Edoardo Zambanini, along with Andrea Pasqualon and road captain Damiano Caruso, who brings extensive experience with ten prior participations.

Compelling as the narrative is for Bahrain Victorious, Tadej Pogačar’s scenario adds an intriguing layer. Following a fall at Strade Bianche, Joxean Matxin, sports director of UAE Team Emirates-XRG, has been closely monitoring the Slovenian’s recovery. He commented recently about Pogačar's condition, stating, "I don’t know if he’ll be 100% fit on Saturday, but I know he’s fine." His optimism resonates despite uncertainty regarding whether Pogačar can compete at full capacity for the arduous race ahead.

Matxin further detailed the challenges that lie ahead for Pogačar, emphasizing the race's lengthy distance of 290 kilometers and an expected average speed of 46 kilometers per hour, which necessitates not only physical endurance but also strategic cunning. Notably, Matxin pointed out, "It will be a race of 290 km, over six hours long and with an average speed of 46 km/h. The strange thing is that such a race can be decided in the space of five minutes, during which all the runners can be on the same level: Tadej included." This revelation underscores the nuanced dynamics that could unfold, with the possibility for a surprise attack or a tightly contested sprint finish.

The race may be further complicated by predictions regarding the competitors’ performances based on previous results. Matxin noted that swift riders like Jasper Phillipsen and Michael Matthews resisted until the finish line during the previous year’s edition, suggesting that Filippo Ganna might repeat that resilience this time around. In an interesting twist, Tim Wellens had hinted at the potential for Pogačar to make an aggressive move on the Cipressa climb — a strategy that could redefine the race's outcome should he find the right moment.

As enthusiasts, teams, and contenders gear up for Milano-Sanremo 2025, the stage is set for an explosive display of cycling prowess. With its rich history and the unpredictable nature of racing, each edition promises fresh excitement, and this year is poised to deliver thrilling moments. The unique combination of emerging talent, recovering champions, and seasoned competitors ensures that any outcome remains possible. Fans around the globe will be eagerly watching as riders take on the iconic climbs and approach that final stretch on Via Roma. Racing fans, brace yourselves! Saturday’s going to be one for the books!
