Marian Keyes' Walsh Sisters Set For Australian TV Debut

The beloved characters come to life in a new series premiering exclusively on Stan.

In an exciting development for fans of Marian Keyes, the acclaimed Irish author’s beloved characters are set to make their television debut. The upcoming series, titled The Walsh Sisters, has officially been acquired by Australian streaming service Stan, marking a significant milestone for the adaptation of Keyes’ bestselling novels. This six-part comedy-drama series promises to bring the chaotic yet endearing lives of the Walsh family to screens, following their adventures in Dublin.

Commissioned by Irish public broadcaster RTÉ in collaboration with the BBC, The Walsh Sisters is poised to capture the hearts of both existing fans and new viewers alike. The series will showcase the lives of five sisters—Anna, Rachel, Maggie, Claire, and Helen—as they navigate the complexities of adulthood, dealing with themes of love, heartbreak, grief, and the unique bonds of family.

Filming for the series recently wrapped up in Dublin, and anticipation is building as Keyes embarks on a promotional tour across Australia. "Australian readers have always been huge supporters of my novels, particularly those about the Walsh Sisters, and there’s such a treat in store for you," Keyes expressed during her tour, which includes stops in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Busselton, Margaret River, Hobart, and Adelaide.

The series features a talented ensemble cast, including Louisa Harland from Derry Girls as Anna, Caroline Menton as Rachel, Danielle Galligan as Claire, Máiréad Tyers as Helen, and Stefanie Preissner as Maggie. Preissner, who also serves as a writer for the series, has been instrumental in adapting Keyes’ work for the screen, penning four of the six episodes. The remaining two episodes are written by Kefi Chadwick, known for her work on Rivals.

Director Ian Fitzgibbon, recognized for his previous projects like Hullraisers and Moone Boy, helms the series, ensuring that the sharp wit and warmth of Keyes’ writing are effectively translated to the screen. Stan’s Chief Content Officer, Cailah Scobie, expressed confidence in the project, stating, "With Ian Fitzgibbon at the helm, alongside such a talented cast, we’re confident the series will capture Marian’s sharp wit and her heartwarming characters that have captivated readers for decades."

Keyes’ novels have garnered immense popularity, selling over 39 million copies worldwide and being translated into 36 languages. Her accolades include being named Author of the Year at the prestigious British Book Awards in 2022. The adaptation of The Walsh Sisters is particularly exciting as it brings to life characters from Keyes’ well-loved books, including Rachel’s Holiday and Anybody Out There.

As the series unfolds, viewers will witness the sisters’ journey through their late 20s and 30s, filled with in-jokes, hand-me-down resentments, and the enduring love that binds them together. Despite the challenges they face, including heartbreak, addiction, and the trials of parenthood, the Walsh sisters maintain a sense of humor and connection that resonates with audiences.

In addition to the lead cast, the series features notable actors such as Aidan Quinn, who plays the role of Jack ‘Daddy’ Walsh, and Carrie Crowley as the eccentric Mammy. Other cast members include Jay Duffy as Rachel’s complicated love interest, Luke Costello, and Debi Mazar as Chaquie, adding further depth to the ensemble.

Marian Keyes has expressed her excitement about the adaptation, stating, "This is so exciting!!!! I'm beside myself! I love the scripts; they've really kept the spirit of the books. It's been almost impossible to keep this a secret and it's a great feeling that the news is now out in the world." She emphasized her admiration for the cast, noting, "Individually and collectively the five young women playing the sisters astonished me. Their warm, bickery engagement feels just like a family."

As the series gears up for its exclusive premiere on Stan, fans are eagerly awaiting the opportunity to see how Keyes’ narrative and characters are brought to life. The show is expected to resonate with viewers not only for its humor but also for its emotional depth, capturing the essence of what it means to be part of a family.

In a media landscape that has seen a surge of adaptations, The Walsh Sisters stands out as a promising entry that combines beloved literary characters with the allure of television storytelling. With a focus on sisterhood, resilience, and the complexities of familial relationships, this series is set to be a compelling watch for audiences in Australia and beyond.

As the release date approaches, the excitement surrounding The Walsh Sisters continues to grow, promising a delightful treat for both longtime fans of Marian Keyes and newcomers alike. This adaptation is not just another series; it’s a celebration of the bonds that tie us together, even in the face of life’s challenges.
