March 2025 Brings Exciting Lunar And Solar Eclipses

Skywatchers in Germany prepare for stunning astronomical events as spring arrives.

As March unfolds, amateur astronomers in Germany are gearing up for two spectacular celestial events: a total lunar eclipse and a partial solar eclipse. Highlighting the month’s astronomical features, the full moon will first emerge, casting its silvery glow during a remarkable lunar eclipse on March 14, 2025.

The lunar spectacle will begin when the moon enters the Earth's penumbral shadow at 4:56 AM, followed by its entry into the umbral shadow at 6:09 AM. The peak of the eclipse will occur at 7:26 AM when the moon is completely immersed in the umbra, marking the start of totality. Unfortunately, however, this impressive moment will be missed by viewers in Central Europe as the moon sets behind the horizon mid-eclipse.

This monthly full moon, known for its many names, is referred to as the Lenzmoon, Wormmoon, Fastenmoon, or Crow Moon. Each name signifies different cultural perceptions and traditions related to the full moon in March.

But that's not all! On March 29, 2025, stargazers will also have the chance to witness a partial solar eclipse. During this event, the new moon will move in front of the sun, obscuring as much as 93 percent of the sun's disk. Timing for this solar event varies by location: in Hamburg, the eclipse will begin at 11:25 AM and end at 1:09 PM; while in Berlin, it will start at 11:32 AM and conclude at 1:08 PM. In Munich, viewers can expect it to extend from 11:27 AM to 12:56 PM.

The coverage of the sun during this eclipse will vary depending on the observers' locations. For instance, in Hamburg, 21 percent will be obscured, while in Berlin 15 percent, Dresden will see 13 percent, and Munich 11 percent of the sun covered.

As exciting as it sounds, observers are reminded of the critical safety precautions necessary for watching solar eclipses. Looking directly at the sun without appropriate protection is dangerous. Safe viewing methods include using specialized solar viewing glasses or indirect viewing techniques.

Moreover, on March 20, 2025, the vernal equinox will occur, defining the astronomical start of spring as the sun crosses the celestial equator at 10:01 AM. This astronomical event not only marks a transition in the seasons but also signifies a time of renewal and growth for many.

These upcoming celestial phenomena promise to be memorable experiences for sky enthusiasts and serve to remind us of the wonders of the universe. With the combination of the lunar eclipse and the partial solar eclipse, March 2025 is set to be a remarkable month for astronomical observation in Germany.
