Lewis Hamilton Claims First Pole For Ferrari In China

Max Verstappen narrowly misses pole by just 0.018 seconds during sprint qualifying.

Lewis Hamilton secured his first pole position for Ferrari as he topped the sprint qualifying at the Shanghai International Circuit on March 21, 2025. Hamilton's impressive lap placed him ahead of his competitors, with Max Verstappen close on his heels, just 0.018 seconds behind, marking a thrilling start to the weekend for the teams.

Christian Horner, the principal of Red Bull Racing, expressed satisfaction with Verstappen's performance, which he categorized as phenomenal. In a post-qualifying interview, he said, “To be 0.018 seconds from pole position, just behind Lewis [Hamilton] is phenomenal. I didn't expect to be on the front row, particularly with two McLarens behind us, so that was a very big performance by Max.” Horner acknowledged the competitive nature of the qualifying sessions that day, attributing the results to a strong recovery from the team compared to their earlier performance in practice.

Meanwhile, George Russell from Mercedes, who qualified fifth, was equally optimistic about his prospects for the sprint race. After expressively praising Hamilton's pole position time, he noted, “I think we’ve got a shot in the Sprint. It could be an interesting race.” His confidence stems from the quick performance he displayed in qualifying, finishing just a fraction slower than the leading drivers. Russell commented on the unpredictable nature of the qualifying session, saying, “It was strange; at one moment I was outside the top 10, the next I jumped up to P2, and it didn’t feel any different, to be honest.”

Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris secured third and sixth places, respectively, for McLaren, but both struggled through the session. Norris, in particular, faced difficulties when he aborted his final lap in SQ3, impacting his grid position for the sprint race. In the assessment of Horner, who keeps a close watch on rival teams, the McLaren drivers' earlier performance looked promising, but it did not translate into a strong qualifying session. Horner said, “It just shows how how close the field is.”

Helmut Marko, Red Bull's top advisor, commended Verstappen's performance, highlighting how he had improved his time by seven-tenths from SQ2 to SQ3. Marko remarked, “We completely rebuilt the setup. The handling was clearly improved, and then came a mega lap from Max. He made no mistakes at all.” Despite their success, Marko cautioned, “It will be a tough race, I think. It's far from certain that this starting grid will make it to the finish like this.”

The Ferrari team saw a stark contrast between Hamilton's qualifying victory and that of his teammate, Charles Leclerc, who finished fourth. Leclerc acknowledged Hamilton’s superior performance, stating, “From the beginning, I felt like I was a step back compared to Lewis and Lewis was just faster today.” He had his struggles particularly in Turns 1, 2, and 3, where he felt he couldn’t match Hamilton’s pace, despite the close competition emerging between the top contenders.

The unique dynamics of the field in 2025 come from consistent improvements among the teams, making each qualifying session unpredictable. As fate would have it, the grid placement ahead of the sprint race is expected to provide thrilling competition. The sprint race begins at 03:00 UK time on March 22, 2025, and there are hopes that the close results will translate into exciting race action.

The qualifying results look tight. Verstappen’s quick lap and Hamilton's mastery have set up a front row that fans are eager to watch in the sprint race. With different strategies at play, including Piastri and the Mercedes duo in the mix, there's a palpable sense of anticipation. The performance of each driver on race day will determine the outcome, and many in the paddock believe that an upset could be on the cards.

As the teams head into the sprint race, all eyes will be on the developments on track. With the excitement building for what promises to be a dramatic contest, fans are left to wonder how the dynamics will shift throughout the competition. Every fraction of time counts, and as Russell pointed out, “I think it can just go any way between the top couple of teams.”

Fans of Formula 1 are in for a treat as they watch the closely matched contenders fight for position, showcasing not just speed but also strategy in their quest for victory. The season is shaping up to be one of thrilling finishes and fierce rivalries, as drivers push their cars to the limits in the hopes of standing atop the podium.
