Jimmy Carter Post Office Renamed As Tribute To Legacy

The U.S. Postal Service honors former President and First Lady with renaming ceremony following their passing.

PLAINS, Ga. — A fitting tribute to the lives and legacies of former President Jimmy Carter and the late First Lady Rosalynn Carter has been officially enacted, with President Joe Biden signing H.R. 9600 to rename the U.S. Postal Service facility at 119 Main Street in Plains, Georgia, as the "Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Post Office." The Carters, who spent their lives deeply rooted in their hometown, passed away within months of one another—Rosalynn on November 19, 2023, and Jimmy on January 7, 2024—leaving behind not only their personal memories but also substantial impacts as global leaders and humanitarian advocates.

The renaming campaign was led by Representative Sanford Bishop (GA-02) with bipartisan support from Georgia’s Congressional delegation, including Senators Jon Ossoff and Raphael Warnock. Senator Ossoff stated, "Renaming the post office in Plains, Georgia, in honor of President Jimmy Carter and First Lady Rosalynn Carter is a tribute to their lifelong service. The Carters have left an indelible mark on our nation and the world." Senator Warnock echoed sentiments of commitment and equality, remarking, "Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter led exemplary lives... fiercely committed to uplifting the lives of all Americans."

The post office now carries the names of two extraordinary individuals whose impact transcended their small southern town. Throughout his life, Jimmy Carter, who once farmed peanuts, dedicated decades to humanitarian efforts globally after his presidency, earning the Nobel Peace Prize for his extensive work to promote peace and democracy. Rosalynn, alongside her husband, strongly advocated for mental health awareness and support for caregivers.

Public figures from across the political spectrum have weighed in following the news of Carter's passing, with Texas Governor Greg Abbott offering condolences to the Carter family, alongside millions of Americans. He stated, "Cecilia and I mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter... His service as the 39th President of the United States leaves behind a great legacy." Former President George W. Bush also shared his thoughts, highlighting Carter's steadfast values and service, declaring, "James Earl Carter, Jr. was a man of deeply held convictions. He dignified the office...and his efforts to leave behind a world for the next generation will inspire Americans for years to come."

Amid these tributes, ordinary citizens have also shared outstanding memories and interactions with the Carters, reflecting their kindness and accessibility. One such memory recalls the poignant atmosphere at Maranatha Baptist Church, where Carter often delivered sermons. A community member recalled, "He was always encouraging us to be a good person and help others." The Carters demonstrated genuine humility, engaging with churchgoers as equals, which endeared them to countless residents.

Within the church, tributes were affectionately shared, recalling times when Amy Carter humorously participated, showcasing the very essence of the family being deeply woven within the fabric of their community. The Acts of Faith and humanity embodied by both Carters continue to shine as guiding principles to aspire to, as described by Julie Pennington-Russell, First Baptist Church's senior pastor, who noted how the Carters "embodied the spirit of Christ, whether on the global stage or at home over casserole on paper plates."

Looking forward, Jimmy Carter's funeral will be held on January 9, 2024, at the Washington National Cathedral with planned ceremonies including private and state funerals along with lying in state at the U.S. Capitol. Reflecting on the upcoming ceremonies, numerous members of the public have been eager to honor and celebrate the Carters' remarkable lives.

Former President Biden reflected positively on Jimmy Carter during these somber times, stating, "You could say his life was reflective of what it means to live with meaning and purpose." Reminding the audience of Carter’s humanitarian achievements and moral clarity, Biden insisted, "We could all do well to be a little more like Jimmy Carter. His lasting impact will not only be felt today but for generations to come."

Indeed, the legacy of Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of service, community, and humility. The renaming of the post office is just one of many honors acknowledging the extraordinary contributions this couple made to their country and the world.
