Vietnam Celebrates Historic AFF Cup 2024 Victory

Team honors ancestors and reflects on achievements after regional championship win

Vietnam's national football team made history on January 7, 2024, triumphantly returning home with the AFF Cup 2024 championship trophy, celebrating their victory with deep respect for the nation's ancestral heritage. Led by coach Kim Sang Sik, team captain Đỗ Duy Mạnh, and delegation head Trần Anh Tú, the team presented the prestigious trophy at the Kính Thiên Temple, atop Nghĩa Lĩnh Mountain, where they paid homage to the Hùng Kings, the legendary figures credited with founding the nation.

The moment was steeped in significance. Surrounded by representatives from the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and the Phu Tho tourism department, the delegation offered incense and gratitude for the achievements accomplished during the championship. This ceremony was more than just ritual; it marked the culmination of hard work and determination exhibited by the entire team.

Coach Kim Sang Sik expressed heartfelt emotions about the AFF Cup 2024 campaign, which evoked strong feelings throughout each match. He stated, “Vietnam's national team went through many mixed emotions, but I truly lived my feelings through each match, showing the desire to win with my players.” His candor illustrated both the struggles and jubilations faced on the field. Under his guidance, the Vietnam team delivered convincing performances, finishing the tournament undefeated.

During the tournament, Vietnam achieved unprecedented success, noted for clinching the championship without losing any matches. They produced seven victories alongside one draw, most remarkably defeating the defending champions Thailand twice during the finals—an accomplishment not seen before. These victories showcased the team's progress and resilience, leading to their third regional championship title.

Reflecting on his team's approach, Kim acknowledged areas for growth. He pointed out, “I must say Vietnamese players need more aggressive play during matches… players need to practice more to improve their fighting spirit.” He emphasized the importance of maintaining tactical balance by combining strong defenders like Đỗ Duy Mạnh with offensive players like Hoàng Đức and Quang Hải, ensuring the team remains dynamic and competitive.

The team not only made headlines with their performance but also set new records. With outstanding home victories at the Việt Trì stadium, they brought excitement to local fans and raised expectations for future competitions. One shining star was Nguyễn Xuân Sơn, who played a pivotal role with his remarkable contributions throughout the tournament.

After the victory ceremony at the Hùng Kings' Monument, the delegation moved to the historic site to honor the ancestors with the trophy. There, coach Kim Sang Sik officially logged his commitment to the team’s continuous improvement in the golden guest book at the temple, emphasizing the ambition to bring more accolades to Vietnamese football.

Looking forward, the coach and his team voiced their intention to unite as they prepare for upcoming challenges, particularly the final qualifying rounds of the Asian Cup 2027. Team captain Đỗ Duy Mạnh echoed the sentiments of his teammates and coach, saying, “We pledge to unite and train hard to continue representing our country bravely.” This forward-facing commitment signals their readiness to not only uphold their recent triumphs but to strive for greater achievements on the international stage.

With this celebration not only marking the end of one glorious campaign but also igniting excitement for what lies ahead, Vietnam stands on the brink of potentially becoming a formidable force in Southeast Asian football.
