INGLEWOOD, Calif. — J.K. Dobbins heard all the naysayers after an injury-plagued start to his career. Now, the 25-year-old running back is smiling at his critics following an impressive Los Angeles Chargers debut. Dobbins rushed 10 times for 135 yards and a touchdown, leading the Chargers to a 22-10 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, marking his first game since suffering a season-ending torn Achilles.
“I'm blessed, man, the Lord put me in the position, and I was ready for it,” Dobbins told USA TODAY Sports. “He answered my prayers, you know. And I keep gettingbetter each and every week, you know, get more in shape, and I'll be ready to go.”
Despite his talent, Dobbins’ NFL career has been marred by injuries. Originally drafted as a second-round pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 2020, he faced multiple setbacks, including season-ending knee injuries and, most recently, the Achilles tear. Those challenges led him to sign a one-year prove-it deal with the Chargers in April.
Dobbins' debut was free from injury and stunningly effective. His 135 rushing yards represent his second-highest single-game total and his fifth career 100-yard game. He scored the Chargers’ first touchdown on a 12-yard run, breaking through tackles and showing his resilience. He later delivered impressive runs of 46 and 61 yards, highlighting his recovery from injuries.
“He played a great game. We love J.K. He brings energy every day to practice and in the games. We block for him with our everything,” said Chargers wide receiver Joshua Palmer, reflecting the team's support for their rejuvenated star. “It's great to see him shine.”
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh, who has known Dobbins since coaching against him during his time at Michigan, was thrilled with the performance. “J.K. Dobbins, what an incredible game,” Harbaugh said. “Breaking those long runs and just getting tough yards.” The Chargers ran the football 27 times for 176 yards, showcasing their commitment to the run game under Harbaugh, who is known for his physical style of play.
Looking forward, Dobbins aims to stay healthy throughout the season. He is driven to utilize his talent within the Chargers' run-oriented offensive scheme. “It means a lot to me. I've had unfortunate injuries,” he shared. “And everyone thought I was finished, but that's not how I’m wired. I grew up with hard workers ... We're gonna be a good team and you know, I'm back. I’m back and ready to go.”
With Dobbins back on the field and making significant contributions, the Chargers are feeling optimistic about their season. After enduring the trials of last year, the energy he brings is infectious, setting high expectations as they head toward the Playoffs. If Dobbins can maintain his health, he may become the key player propelling the Chargers toward postseason success.
