Höhner's Micki Schläger Faces Rehabilitation After Knee Surgery

The beloved musician struggles through carnival season but looks forward to returning to the stage after recovery.

Micki Schläger, the 56-year-old keyboardist and singer of the popular German band Höhner, is currently recuperating in the Atos-Klinik in Kölner Mediapark following a knee replacement surgery. Schläger’s recent carnival season performance was his tenth, but he faced significant challenges due to worsening pain in his left knee, which he managed to endure only through painkillers.

As his fellow bandmates took the chance to relax on holiday after the carnival, Schläger instead found himself in the hospital, preparing for a long-awaited operation that had become necessary due to extensive wear from his past as a football player. “I had been struggling with knee and meniscus injuries since my active time as a footballer at BC 09 Oberbruch,” Schläger explained, reflecting on how his sporting ambitions had to be set aside in favor of his music career.

While performing during the carnival sessions, the keyboardist tried to hide his pain, persevering through performances that demanded strength and joy, which he credits to the euphoric atmosphere created by fans. “It was the joy of the crowd that kept my spirits up, even as I endured pain,” Schläger remarked, emphasizing how the friendly, festive crowd carried him throughout the performances.

His determination was particularly tested during the demanding climbs up the stairs at Gürzenich, a frequent performance venue. “There’s arguably no one who doesn’t groan softly when they walk up the Gürzenich stairs. I wanted to avoid hindering our crew, so I every time opted to take the stairs instead of the elevator,” he recalled with laughter.

The actual surgery took place just days before the report on March 25, 2025. Before the procedure, Schläger humorously noted, “My doctor told me I would be lying in the same bed that former handball coach Heiner Brand once occupied. If that’s not a good omen, I don’t know what is.”

Following the surgery, Schläger faced the first steps of recovery with enthusiasm, motivated by picturesque views of the Cologne Cathedral from his hospital room. “Every time I walked with crutches, the view of the cathedral spires served as my motivation,” he stated, clearly eager to reclaim his mobility. “With each step, I felt proud to reach the window and see that amazing view.”

Micki is expected to be discharged from the hospital on Friday, March 28, 2025, and will immediately move on to rehabilitation. After Easter, he has plans to return to the stage with the Höhner during their Rock and Roll Circus shows in Düsseldorf and Oberhausen. “It’s all completely planned. Right before the rehearsals, I’ll finish my rehab,” he confirmed, hinting at a light-hearted return to the stage. “Let’s see if I’m ready for a split on the high wire,” he joked, illustrating his unwavering spirit.

Fans have rallied around Schläger, sending numerous well-wishes through social media. As the band’s official Instagram noted, “Our member Micki Schläger is facing hospital and rehabilitation instead of vacation.” This outpouring of support has surely helped lift his spirits during recovery as he gears up for his return to one of Germany's beloved bands.
