Bandai Namco Teases New Xabungle Experimental Video Premiering In May

The upcoming project revives the legacy of the 1982 anime with new content and features, set for a serialized release in April.

Bandai Namco Filmworks has unveiled an exciting teaser for an upcoming experimental video titled BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE L, a fresh take inspired by the classic 1982 anime Blue Gale Xabungle. This revelation came on March 25, 2025, as the company aims to rekindle interest not only in the original series but also in its innovative adaptations.

Set to premiere in May 2025, BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE L is part of a broader initiative by Bandai Namco Filmworks to infuse new life into its classic franchises. The entertaining yet mature themes within the original anime captivated audiences and remain relevant even decades later.

In conjunction with the new video, Bandai Namco also announced a serialized feature set to launch in Monthly Hobby Japan on April 25, 2025. This addition aims to provide fans with additional content that enhances their engagement with the Xabungle universe, blending nostalgia with contemporary storytelling.

Notably, BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE L follows the launch of previous experimental videos from Sunrise Robot Laboratory. The inaugural video, AURA BATTLER DUNBINE SIDE L, debuted in May 2024, accompanied by new footage alongside classic scenes from the original series. As reported by Joanna Cayanan, "The first 'experimental video' from Sunrise Robot Laboratory is the 'AURA BATTLER DUNBINE SIDE L,' which started streaming in May 2024." Following this, AURA BATTLER DUNBINE SIDE R was released on November 14, 2024, featuring exciting new mecha and weapon designs.

Originally aired in Japan from 1982 to 1983, the Xabungle series explored themes of revenge and rebellion on the fictional planet Zora, where the protagonist Jiron Amos embarks on a quest to avenge his family. Set in a world divided between the Innocent and the Civilians, Jiron steals the titular mecha Xabungle and roams with a group of bandits, the Sandrats, as he seeks justice and stirs a growing insurrection against the reigning powers.

This exploration of complex societal dynamics and personal vendetta not only established a captivating narrative but also set a foundation for ongoing discussions within the anime community about its cultural implications. The series has since spun off other adaptations, including an anime film titled Xabungle Graffiti, released in 1983.

With the upcoming premiere of BLUE GALE XABUNGLE SIDE L, Bandai Namco seeks to celebrate and expand the legacy of the Xabungle franchise. The combination of new content and nostalgic elements is expected to resonate with both long-time fans and newcomers alike, offering a compelling journey through an already rich narrative landscape.

As the anticipation builds for May, fans and anime enthusiasts alike are encouraged to revisit or discover the classic 1982 series, reflecting on its historical significance and the innovations it introduced to the genre. Bandai Namco Filmworks continues to show that classic narratives can evolve while retaining an essence that celebrates the original storytelling.
