Zamora is gearing up for its enchanting holiday festivities with two major parades bringing the spirit of Christmas and the anticipation of the New Year to life. The first event to kick off this lively season is the traditional Cabalgata de Papá Noel, or Santa Claus Parade, taking place on December 23, 2023. This festive procession promises to be spectacular, featuring dozens of characters, delighting children and families throughout the city.
The excitement begins as local confectionery company, Leche Gaza, organizes the parade which is set to commence at 6:30 PM. Roberto Vizán, spokesperson for Leche Gaza, revealed plans for the event: "This year’s Cabalgata will transform the streets of Zamora with over 300 performers showcasing acrobatics and dance, depicted as part of a three-act story. It’s going to be really magical!" Initially starting from Avenida Plaza de Toros, the parade will meander through the streets of Calle Amargura, Avenida Príncipe de Asturias, Santa Clara, Sagasta, and culminate at the Plaza Mayor.
This year, children can look forward to seeing Olaf, the beloved snowman from Disney's Frozen, making his debut alongside Santa, adding to the festive atmosphere. "The introduction of Olaf is sure to create countless smiles among the children, as families come out to revel in the spirit of the season," shared Vizán during the morning broadcast of Hoy por Hoy Zamora.
Just two weeks later, on January 5, the city will host the much-anticipated Cabalgata de Reyes Magos, or Three Kings Parade. This event heralds the arrival of the Wise Men, characterized as the culmination of holiday celebrations. This parade promises exciting new features, primarily shifting the route to allow for smoother traffic management. David Gago, Zamora’s Councilor for Economic Promotion, noted: "This year, we’ve adjusted the Kings' route to turn left at Calle de Amargura, making sure the parade flows without interrupting the city’s traffic too much." The parade is expected to draw around 600 participants and will distribute 60,000 lollipops to attendees, making it one of the most vibrant celebrations yet.
The festivities will take on additional significance this year, as the kings will enter Zamora from the Carrascal neighborhood. They will meet local children and families before continuing to the Cathedral Square. According to Gago, these interactions are integral to enhancing children’s enjoyment of the occasion, stating, "Families are encouraged to bring their children to personally greet the Kings, creating memorable experiences. It’s about making the day special for our youngest residents."
To bolster this connection, the Kings will also visit local hospitals, bringing gifts and joy to children unable to participate due to health concerns. This gesture emphasizes community spirit and the joy of giving—central themes during this festive period.
The Kings' parade will kick off at 6:30 PM, with many additional attractions planned, including theatrical performances, dance groups, music, and historically themed vehicles. The event will feature host Miguel de Lucas, who will entertain the crowd and oversee various festivities until the parade concludes late in the evening.
Zamora's holiday celebrations are not just about the parades themselves; they reflect the city's continued commitment to fostering community ties and spreading joy. Each aspect—whether it’s the dazzling floats of Santa Claus or the regal entrance of the Three Kings—serves to create unforgettable memories for children and families. With both events expected to draw large crowds, there is no doubt the streets of Zamora will be brimming with laughter, excitement, and holiday cheer this season.
Finally, with the spirit of celebration swirling through Zamora, there’s much anticipation surrounding the unique experiences and togetherness these events promote. The town’s efforts not only honor traditions but also embrace fresh ideas, ensuring everyone enjoys the magic of the holiday season.
