On March 24, 2025, readers will be treated to a remarkable collection of storytelling from the beloved author Yoko Sano with the launch of her new book, Complete Children's Stories. This compilation is an embrace of the unique blend of innocence and realism that characterizes Sano's work, featuring a total of 39 stories, including 17 picture book texts that have not been previously published in standalone form.

Yoko Sano, who passed away on November 5, 2010, at the age of 72, was known for her significant contributions to children's literature, having a profound impact on the genre. Born in Beijing in 1938, Sano graduated from Musashino Art University and went on to craft stories that resonate with both children and adults alike, drawing on her rich life experiences and imaginative prowess. Her work, such as the much-celebrated The Cat Who Lived a Million Times, has earned her numerous accolades and a dedicated fan base.

As part of the book launch celebration, a special event will take place at Junkudo Bookstore Ikebukuro Main Store on April 11, 2025, at 19:00. The evening will feature a conversation between Masanori Sogatani, the book's editor and a friend of Sano, and Gen Hirokawa, Sano's eldest son and an illustrator. Together, they will discuss the significance of Sano's storytelling and share personal anecdotes that bring her vibrant spirit back to life.

With a participation fee set at 2,000 yen for in-store attendees and a reduced fee of 1,100 yen for those joining online, the event is designed to be accessible to a wide audience while celebrating the legacy of Sano. The venue can accommodate up to 60 people in person, enhancing the intimate nature of the gathering.

“The selected works embody the essence of what makes children's stories captivating and profound,” said editor Masanori Sogatani. “The criteria for selecting these stories focused on their accessibility for children, ensuring each tale provides an engaging and fulfilling reading experience irrespective of age.” He continued, “Sano's unique ability to traverse the realms of the sacred and the mundane makes her stories extraordinary.”

Indeed, Sano's narratives often oscillate between whimsy and deeper existential themes, making them relatable to both young readers and their parents. Her ability to conjure a sense of nostalgia and wonder is partly what has solidified her position as a master storyteller. The stories collected in this new volume, including titles that span the spectrum from delightful to poignant, create an enchanting reading experience.

The special event on April 11th promises to be a joy for attendees as they reconnect with the enchanting tales of Sano and share the timeless joy her stories bring. “It’s a chance to reflect on how Sano’s work encourages us to reconnect with our childhood selves,” remarked Hirokawa. During the event, attendees will not only gain deeper insights into Sano’s creative process but also have the opportunity to ask questions and engage with those who knew her personally.

Furthermore, fans and newcomers alike can look forward to receiving a unique addition to their experience—those participating in-store will receive an original badge commemorating the launch of Complete Children's Stories.

Sano's literary contributions range across mediums, including picture books, essays, and novels. Alongside her acclaimed children’s stories, she received prestigious awards for her essays and novels, such as the Kobayashi Hideo Award and the Sankei Children’s Publishing Cultural Award.
