Yellow Weather Alert Issued For Florentine Region

Authorities warn of hydrogeological risks due to expected rainfall over the coming days.

Authorities have issued a yellow weather alert for the Florentine region, forecasting hydrogeological risks due to expected rainfall over the next two days. The Alert Code Giallo, issued by the Regional Functional Center, will take effect tonight, February 25, at 8 PM, and remain active until midnight on February 26, 2025. This alert is particularly focused on the risks associated with secondary waterways, including the Ema, Mugnone, and Terzolle rivers.

Today’s weather forecast predicts scattered rain showers throughout the metropolitan area, which are set to intensify as the evening progresses. According to the latest updates from the Centre for Functional Regional Monitoring (Cfr), the rains are expected to be more prevalent across northern Tuscany. The meteorological service also warns of potential thunderstorms beginning late Tuesday and continuing through early Wednesday, when conditions are likely to worsen.

The Cfr’s recent report indicated, "The new yellow alert will be valid until midnight on February 26, and will be for hydrogeological risk along the minor watercourses." This follows previous warnings issued earlier this week concerning severe weather conditions affecting various parts of Tuscany.

On Wednesday, precipitation is expected to become widespread, particularly during the first half of the day. The Lamma meteorological service has stated, "Heavy rainfall is expected, particularly during the first part of the day on Wednesday." The forecast suggests the possibility of significant accumulations of rain, which could lead to rising water levels and increased risks of flooding.

Authorities urge residents, especially those living near minor waterways, to remain vigilant and prepared for potential flooding. The alert encompasses not only Florence but also nearby communities such as Bagno a Ripoli, Fiesole, Greve in Chianti, Impruneta, Lastra a Signa, Pontassieve, San Casciano Val di Pesa, Scandicci, and Tavarnelle Val di Pesa. Those living near rivers should monitor conditions closely and stay informed through official updates.

Additional weather indicators suggest temperatures will decrease across the region, with snow levels expected to drop to around 1200 meters. The full impact of the weather system is still being assessed, and various advisories will be update as conditions evolve.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on the situation through local news outlets and official channels, and to adopt necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their property against potential flooding and adverse weather conditions. The Civil Protection Department continues to monitor rainfall patterns and the potential impacts, providing timely updates to the public.
