World Snooker Championship Begins In Sheffield With High Hopes

Local businesses expect a boost as top players vie for the title

The excitement is palpable as the 2025 World Snooker Championship kicks off today at the iconic Crucible Theatre in Sheffield. This prestigious tournament, which runs from April 19 to May 5, is set to attract around 12,000 fans from across the globe, marking a significant moment not just for the sport of snooker, but also for the city of Sheffield, which has proudly hosted the event for over four decades.

As the first rounds commence, local businesses are bracing for a surge in footfall, with snooker fans flocking to the area to enjoy both the action on the tables and the vibrant local scene. Dan Kirkland, the owner of the renowned 'Spot On' snooker club, expressed the positive impact of the championship on the community, stating, "We get people coming from not just around the country, but other countries as well- Germany, France, and even America." He emphasized the importance of the event, saying, "It's a very, very important few weeks for Sheffield. As a city, we've been supporting it for decades... it puts Sheffield on the map."

The championship not only highlights Sheffield's rich snooker heritage but also fosters a new generation of players. Kirkland noted, "It creates another generation of interest in snooker, to keep the legacy alive." This sentiment resonates throughout the local snooker clubs and hospitality venues, all of which benefit from the influx of visitors during the tournament.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on the competitors vying for the coveted title. Defending champion Kyren Wilson aims to break the so-called 'Crucible curse,' which states that no first-time winner has successfully defended their title since the championship moved to the Crucible in 1977. Wilson will begin his title defense today against Lei Peifan, the Scottish Open winner. Having won four ranking events this season, Wilson is not only ready to defend his title but is relishing the challenge.

Meanwhile, Judd Trump, the world number one, is also a strong contender. With three tournament wins this season, including two major titles—the Saudi Arabia Masters and the UK Championship—Trump’s performance has boosted his earnings to unprecedented levels. The top prize of £500,000 would bring him close to the £2 million mark in total earnings for the season. Trump, who has faced Wilson in three finals this term, is eager to add a second World Championship title to his accolades. He stated, "If I can produce the scintillating, fast-paced snooker I’m known for, I can sweep virtually any opponent aside."

But the competition is fierce, with legends like Ronnie O'Sullivan, Mark Selby, and John Higgins also in the mix. O'Sullivan, a favorite despite not having competed since January, has a chance to make history by claiming his eighth title. His recent practice footage, showcasing a maximum 147 break in under seven minutes, suggests he remains a formidable opponent. O'Sullivan has been a constant presence at the Crucible since turning professional in 1992, and his experience could play a crucial role in his performance.

John Higgins, another member of the esteemed 'Class of 92,' has shown renewed vigor, having recently won his first ranking title in four years at the World Open. Following this victory, he also triumphed at the Tour Championship, defeating Selby in a high-quality final. Higgins, who turns 50 next month, is determined to claim his first world title since 2011.

On the other hand, Mark Williams has faced challenges, particularly with eyesight issues that have affected his game. After a disappointing loss to Ding Junhui, Williams candidly assessed his chances, saying, "Whoever qualifies is going to be praying they draw me in the first round." His recent struggles could make him an underdog in this year's tournament.

Mark Selby, a four-time world champion, comes into the tournament with restored confidence after recent victories at the British Open and Welsh Open. He is set to face qualifier Ben Woollaston in the first round, where he is expected to advance. Shaun Murphy, who lifted the Masters trophy this season, is also in contention and looking to add to his accolades.

The tournament also sees a record 10 Chinese players competing, including Ding Junhui, who aims to break his streak of first-round exits at the Crucible. With a growing number of talented players from China, the hopes for a first world champion from the country are high. Among them are Zhao Xintong, who faces Jak Jones, the 2024 finalist, in the first round.

As the players gathered outside the Crucible Theatre for the tournament launch, they walked the green carpet, reminiscent of the snooker tables, and signed autographs for eager fans. The atmosphere was electric, with young fans delighted to meet their snooker heroes. The prestigious trophy was also unveiled, standing proudly as a symbol of the competition that will unfold over the next two weeks.

The 2025 World Snooker Championship is not just a sporting event; it is a celebration of snooker’s rich history and its future. As the competition progresses, fans and players alike will witness thrilling matches, intense rivalries, and the emergence of new talent, all set against the backdrop of Sheffield’s vibrant community. With so much at stake, the excitement is just beginning, and snooker enthusiasts around the world are eagerly tuning in to see who will ultimately lift the trophy.
