WHO Declares Mpox As Global Health Emergency

Rising cases across Africa prompt urgent international response to the Mpox outbreak

On August 14, 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared Mpox, formerly known as Monkeypox, as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. This decision followed alarming reports of increased cases mainly from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and several other countries across Africa. The declaration was preceded by the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) announcing its own Public Health Emergency of Continental Security just the day before, highlighting the urgency and severity of the outbreak.

The current outbreak is linked to clade I Mpox, particularly sub-clades Ia and Ib, with detections noted even beyond Africa, including countries like Sweden and Thailand. These cases are tied to international travel, which raises significant concern for public health authorities globally. The rapid spread of the virus has heightened vigilance and caution among health officials, who stress the importance of monitoring and rapid response to mitigate potential escalation.

Recognizing the impending challenge, the Biden-Harris Administration has ramped up efforts to bolster domestic preparedness against potential Mpox cases. While there have been no reported cases of clade I Mpox in the U.S. yet, the administration asserts the general population remains at low risk, thanks to proactive measures being implemented across federal departments and agencies. An incident response structure established since February 2024 aims to prepare the country for any potential cases of this viral disease.

The U.S. has proactively distributed more than one million doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine, which has been made available since August 2022. This widespread inoculation effort aims to protect at-risk populations and curb the virus’s potential proliferation. Enhanced diagnostics also play a key role, as the U.S. is now utilizing wastewater monitoring alongside traditional testing methods to detect the virus more effectively.

On the international front, the U.S. is taking substantial steps to assist Africa's response to the Mpox outbreak. Over the past few months, the U.S. government has allocated over $55 million to aid efforts, with more than 200 personnel, including epidemiologists and public health specialists, deployed to the region to provide support. Notably, the U.S. has donated 50,000 doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to the DRC, underscoring its commitment to international health security.

Health officials everywhere are urging travelers, particularly to and from affected regions, to exercise increased caution. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has issued updated Health Alerts and Travel Health Notices, with advice for travelers to remain vigilant and adopt preventive measures. Nonetheless, the travel to these regions is not outright discouraged, but rather travelers are encouraged to stay informed about the situation.

According to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, the outbreak of Mpox constitutes a serious global health concern, sparking fears of sporadic imported cases arising on the European continent. They advise readiness for testing and diagnostic support as the situation develops.

Significantly, Eurofins Scientific has announced the availability of its Real-Time PCR Assay for efficient identification of the Mpox virus. This testing is integral to surveillance and rapid case detection efforts aimed at controlling the emergency effectively. The PCR assay, which is capable of detecting the Mpox virus and differentiates it from other viruses within the orthopox category, is seen as a key advancement during the outbreak.

The Mplex Mpox and Orthopox assay was developed to address the specific challenges posed by the Mpox virus and undergoes regular evaluation for efficacy and accuracy. The result of stringent testing shows promising results, allowing health authorities to rely on these tools to manage and track the virus.

With the case numbers still climbing, the need for constant monitoring, effective response measures, and transparency among health authorities is more important than ever.
