Waters Doms Opening Weekend Of 2025 Supercars Season

Three wins and three poles highlight dominant performance at Sydney Motorsport Park

Cam Waters has kicked off the 2025 Supercars season with remarkable flair, securing three consecutive pole positions and victories during the opening weekend at Sydney Motorsport Park.

Beginning on February 21, Waters, driving for Tickford Racing, laid down his intent by winning the first race convincingly by 17 seconds, marking his dominance as he executed flawless laps throughout. The sheer performance of his Ford Mustang set the tone, echoing his confidence and skill behind the wheel.

The spotlight quickly intensified during the second race on February 22, where Waters faced fierce competition from Triple Eight Race Engineering's Broc Feeney and reigning champion Will Brown. The tension escalated during the final laps, culminating in one of the closest finishes in Supercars history. Waters tipped Feeney as they battled for the lead, but rather than capitalizing on the opportunity, he slowed to allow Feeney to retake the position. This tactical decision created space for Brown to join the fray, but Waters would not be denied. Using fresher tires, he made his move and executed the perfect side-draft to claim victory by just 0.0308 seconds.

"That was absolutely awesome, I had so much fun then," Waters reflected after the race, highlighting both the thrill and the strategy involved. His victory sent shocks of excitement through the Tickford garage, reaffirming their confidence heading to the next race.

Feeney, who had been battling for the lead, expressed disappointment but acknowledged the hard racing. "I obviously got turned with about five or so laps to go and then Will got caught up," he remarked, emphasizing the intensity of the competition.

The final chapter of the opening weekend unfolded on February 23 under slightly drizzled skies, where Waters once again demonstrated control as he led from pole to win the third race, becoming the first driver to sweep the opening round of the season. The 200km race was marked by fluctuated weather conditions, yet Waters navigated them with ease, showcasing the power of his Mustang, which he described as fast even under damp conditions.

"How awesome isthat? That's sucha mega weekend, and suchanawesome way to start 2025," exclaimed Waters, emphasizing the positivity of the results and his team's efforts. His collection of three wins propelled him to the top of the standings, giving him a 60-point lead going forward.

Although Waters dominated the weekend, competitors such as Chaz Mostert and Brodie Kostecki showcased their talents by finishing strong, affirming the excitement and unpredictability of the series. Mostert, who charged from tenth to third place during Sunday’s race, kept the pressure on the leaders.

With the first weekend of racing now complete, Waters not only set a high standard for himself but also set the stage for what promises to be an exhilarating season of Supercars racing. Having taken 315 points over the weekend, the stakes will be high as the series moves on to Melbourne, where rivalries will undoubtedly continue to intensify.

Fans can expect more thrilling showdowns, as the competition heats up and all eyes remain on Waters, who is currently the man to beat after his historic performance at Sydney Motorsport Park.
