Washoe County Election Official Takes Stress Leave Before Election Day

The interim registrar of voters departs under pressure with early voting set to begin soon

Reno, Nevada - The political tension surrounding the upcoming 2024 presidential election has taken another turn, following the announcement of the stress-related leave of absence taken by Washoe County's interim Registrar of Voters, Cari-Ann Burgess. This development adds to the turmoil facing election officials as the state prepares for one of its most contentious elections to date.

Burgess's leave, reported on Friday by county spokeswoman Bethany Drysdale, has raised eyebrows as it occurs just over six weeks before Election Day. The decision has left significant uncertainty within the operations of Washoe County's election office, pivotal for both state and national outcomes. Known for its competitive nature, Nevada has been historically known to swing between Democratic and Republican candidates, making the roles within its electoral system all the more intense.

Since 2020, this northern Nevada county has found itself under intense scrutiny, particularly following Donald Trump's defeat, when he ignited baseless claims of widespread voter fraud. These claims have led to significant pressures on election administrators, especially Burgess, who is the third person to take on the registrar role since the 2020 election.

Burgess stepped up to the plate earlier this year after her predecessor resigned amid numerous threats. The environment has become increasingly stressful for election officials across the nation, with governors and officials informalizing their methods for securing their workplaces, including panic buttons and bulletproof glass, amid increasing threats.

Reports indicate Burgess requested the medical leave citing stress, and her responsibilities during this precarious time will now be handled by Assistant Registrar Andrew McDonald. The office is currently gearing up for early voting and the distribution of mail ballots, both of which are of utmost importance as they brace for what could be record-breaking turnout.

Drysdale indicated there had been no specific threats against Burgess herself during her tenure, but acknowledged the working environment had experienced significant negative comments and pressure, contributing to the heightened stress levels. "We are focusing on ensuring the election is conducted as securely and efficiently as possible," said Drysdale, who also mentioned the preparation protocols are already underway.

Following the turmoil over election certification from previous primaries, which attracted both legal scrutiny and public outcry, concerns linger about the ability to conduct smooth operations leading up to and following the general election. With recent disputes indicating potential certification challenges, especially fueled by continuing conspiracy theories, the credibility of the electoral process remains under the spotlight.

"This has become increasingly challenging for election officials, particularly leading up to such high-stakes elections. There is immense pressure to perform without error amid verbal and imagined threats and the scrutiny of defeat," said Tammy Patrick, program director for the National Association of Election Officials. The cumulative pressures have led to approximately one-third of election officials eyeing different job pathways or exiting the industry altogether.

Preparations for the November elections are already heightened, with officials from the Nevada Secretary of State’s office coordinating efforts to streamline operations within the Washoe County elections office as Burgess takes her leave. “We are working closely to support the transition of duties and maintain the highest standards of election integrity,” reassures senior officials.

This year’s election aims to see even greater participation from voters eager to make their voices heard after years of divisive rhetoric, unrest, and the increasing need for electoral reform. With the shadows of conspiracy theories and false claims still looming over election processes, the focus now lands heavily on ensuring election security and voter confidence as the countdown to Election Day continues.

Despite the stressors facing election professionals like Burgess, officials remain resolute. They are committed to running secure elections under increasingly challenging conditions with numerous variables at play, closely monitoring the developments within their county and across the United States.
