Warm Weather Arrives But Fine Dust Levels Rise

On the spring equinox, temperatures will rise significantly, though air quality may worsen due to increasing fine dust.

The weather forecast for March 20, 2025, predicts a notable warm-up after a chilly morning, as the floral chill finally begins to dissipate. The expected high will reach 17 degrees Celsius, with most parts of the country experiencing spring-like temperatures. However, the warming trend will be accompanied by rising levels of fine dust, impacting air quality significantly.

In the early hours of the same day, morning temperatures in Seoul will drop to about 1 degree Celsius and can be even lower in other regions, such as Daejeon at -1 degree Celsius and Daegu at 0 degrees Celsius. These conditions are much cooler than typical seasons. The day promises to be beautiful, with mostly clear skies, although central and Jeolla regions may see some clouds.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) has warned of a stark temperature difference expected throughout the day, with highs reaching between 12 to 17 degrees Celsius in various locations. Specifically, the day-night temperature disparity could surpass 15 degrees Celsius in many areas, causing health concerns, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and children, prompting advisories for careful health management.

With respect to air quality, the situation is expected to worsen, especially in the Seoul metropolitan area, Chungnam, and Honam. Early forecasts indicate that these areas will experience notably high levels of fine dust, marked as 'bad.' From the afternoon onward, regions such as Busan and Gyeongnam will also compound the issue, along with other central and southern areas later in the evening. The advisable actions include drinking plenty of water and utilizing protective accessories like sunglasses and wide-brimmed hats to mitigate dust exposure.

In addition to the air quality challenges, strong winds are anticipated in mountainous areas of Gangwon, with gusts projected at speeds exceeding 90 km/h, posing additional risks for residents and travelers. The KMA has recommended that individuals take caution, especially in regions known for strong breezes.

A rain or snow mix might surprise locals in Gangwon Province on the morning of March 20, prompting KMA alerts but should not be significant enough to immobilize infrastructure.

As the spring equinox approaches this Thursday, all signs point towards a complete shift in seasonal weather, pushing aside the chill of winter in favor of a more welcoming climate. This Thursday’s weather not only signifies a change in seasons but is also expected to affect lifestyle patterns, including health and outdoor activities, during this transitional period.

Moving to marine forecasts, the sea conditions will present their own challenges. Waves in the East Sea, West Sea, and South Sea are expected to reach heights of 0.5 to 2.0 meters, while further out at sea, heights could surge to between 1.0 to 3.5 meters, suggesting caution for those venturing onto the waters.

The forecast for March 20, 2025, will thus serve as a reminder of the changing seasons and the complex interplay of temperature, air quality, and weather conditions affecting daily life.
