The Monte-Carlo Masters tribute to tennis legend Rafael Nadal has been postponed by 12 months, following the Spaniard's request. Nadal, who holds an extraordinary record of 11 wins at this prestigious tournament, has opted to delay the ceremony originally scheduled for 2025. Notably, he dominated the men’s singles event from 2005 to 2012, winning eight consecutive titles during that period and boasting an impressive match record of 73 victories from 79 contests at the venue.
The decision to postpone is particularly poignant as Nadal, age 38, faced injuries that thwarted his chance for a farewell performance in the upcoming Monte-Carlo Masters. However, this beloved champion will still have the opportunity to say goodbye to his fans, albeit a year later than initially anticipated.
According to tournament director David Massey, the first tribute honoring Nadal will now take place at the esteemed French Open at Roland Garros, scheduled to kick off on May 25, 2025. This is a fitting tribute for the player who has garnered 14 titles out of his total 22 Grand Slam wins on the clay courts of Roland Garros—a showcase aptly acknowledging Nadal's legacy as ‘The King of Clay.’
Speaking to RMC Sports, Massey explained, “I understand that he’s saving himself for Roland Garros. So, he’ll go to Roland Garros – I believe everything is already planned with them.” He emphasized the significance of the event for Nadal, reflecting on the emotional weight attached to the tournament that has been such a pivotal part of his storied career.
The tribute at the Monte-Carlo Masters has been tentatively rescheduled for 2026, as Massey noted, “We’ve set our sights on 2026. We understand that he wants to keep all of that (the tributes) for this year at Roland Garros. But we’re eager to see him in 2026.” This decision illustrates the mutual respect between Nadal and the tournament organizers, who are keen to honor his remarkable achievements.
The Monte-Carlo Masters holds special importance for many of the world’s elite players as they prepare for the French Open, historically serving as a critical lead-up event. Although Nadal did not compete in 2024 due to injury, his last title win at the Monte-Carlo Masters was in 2018.
