Wakako Shimazaki Surprised By So Kuramoto's Appearance

Famed screenwriter's rare visit sparks joy on TBS show.

Wakako Shimazaki, the well-known Japanese talent, expressed her surprise and admiration during the December 14 episode of TBS's hit show 'The Best Restaurant of Life,' when she found herself face-to-face with the famed screenwriter So Kuramoto.

Kuramoto, who is renowned for creating classic works such as 'Hey, Mom' (前略おふくろ様) and the beloved 'From the North Country' (北の国から) series, was introduced by MC Kato Koji, who noted his traveling all the way from Hokkaido for the special appearance. Shimazaki's response was one of genuine excitement: "Thank you for coming all the way, I’m happy," she exclaimed, reflecting the warm atmosphere of the show.

Kato prompted Kuramoto to share how often he travels between Hokkaido and Tokyo, especially considering the restrictions the pandemic has imposed. Kuramoto candidly revealed, "This is my first time since COVID started," illustrating the challenges and changes the world has undergone during recent years. His admission piqued the curiosity and warmth among the guests, all of whom were thrilled to see the iconic writer after such a long hiatus from public engagements.

Then came Shimazaki's notable remark, which had the audience laughing: "I can’t believe he actually exists, So Kuramoto." It was echoed by her companion on the show, YOU, who humorously added, "He seems like someone from history, right?" This playful exchange captured the fondness and reverence held for Kuramoto, who, at 75, has been honored with significant accolades including the Purple Ribbon Medal for his contributions to screenwriting.

Kuramoto has long been rooted in the cultural fabric of Japan. After relocating to Furano City, Hokkaido, for nearly half a century, his works have significantly shaped Japanese television and cinema. Amid the laughter and camaraderie during the show, Shimazaki’s light-hearted expression captured the essence of the moment, where nostalgia collided with the joy of reconnection.

Your average Saturday night may host various entertainment options, but for fans of Japanese media, this show offered something truly special — the rare opportunity to see Kuramoto, who usually remains behind the scenes, share his presence with fans and fellow performers. Viewers were treated not only to his wisdom but also to the natural chemistry and wit displayed by all guests, creating compelling television.

Even as they indulged in great food and laughter, the real takeaway of the segment was the heartwarming validation of human connection. The pandemic has pulled many people away from interactions, and Kuramoto’s appearance served as both the celebration of artistic contributions and the importance of being present with each other.

And so, as the show drew to a close, it left viewers reflecting on their own relationships and the simple joys of coming together, reminiscent of the warmth brought forth by Kuramoto's unexpected presence. It perfectly encapsulated the sentiment every kind-hearted fan would share: gratefulness for the chance to celebrate the legends who have shaped our cultural experience.

This episode of 'The Best Restaurant of Life' not only showcased culinary delights but also brought forth the idea of celebrating the moments and people who, like So Kuramoto, inspire delight and connection through the art of storytelling.
