Vladimir Shklyarov Ballet Star Dies At 39

The celebrated Russian dancer falls from fifth-floor balcony days before scheduled surgery

The ballet world is mourning the tragic loss of renowned Russian dancer Vladimir Shklyarov, who died at just 39 after falling from the fifth-floor balcony of his apartment on November 16, 2024. This heartbreaking incident occurred just days before he was scheduled to undergo complex spinal surgery.

Shklyarov was not only known for his extraordinary talent but also as a prominent figure at the Mariinsky Theatre, where he had been captivating audiences since 2003. Rising to the rank of principal dancer by 2011, he was celebrated for his performances in classic ballets such as Swan Lake, Romeo and Juliet, and The Nutcracker. The Mariinsky Theatre announced the news of his death, expressing deep condolences to his family and friends, stating, "This is a huge loss not only for the theatre's staff but for all of today’s ballet art."

According to reports, Shklyarov had been taking painkillers for severe back issues related to his upcoming spinal surgery when he fell. His friend Irina Baranovskaya recalled the tragic event on social media, describing how he went out to the narrow balcony for air and to smoke, tragically losing his balance and falling. She called it "a stupid, unbearable accident," reflecting the shock experienced by those close to him.

The Mariinsky Theatre plans to hold public memorial services for Shklyarov after his funeral. Numerous tributes have poured in from the dance community, highlighting not only his technical brilliance but also his charismatic presence on stage. Fellow principal dancer Diana Vishneva articulated the grief felt by the community, saying, "It is impossible to comprehend how early and unfair you passed away. This is the tragedy for our theatre, our common grief, and feeling of emptiness. You were light-hearted, charming, sharing your warmth and light. You always brought smiles and joy."

Shklyarov's artistry earned him accolades, including the title of "Honored Artist of Russia" in 2020, affirming his impact on the ballet scene both nationally and internationally. Following the news of his passing, the American Ballet Theatre, where he performed as a guest artist in the past, expressed sorrow, stating, "Rest in peace, Vladimir. Your light will continue to shine through the beauty you brought to this world."

His life and career were marked not just by applause, but also by personal struggles, including back, foot, and hip injuries. These issues became public as he spoke out against his country's invasion of Ukraine, expressing his concerns over the conflict, which was particularly poignant for him considering his ties to both Russia and Ukraine.

Shklyarov was married to fellow Mariinsky dancer Maria Shirinkina, with whom he shared two children. Their family life was often intertwined with their careers, affirming their dedication to the art of ballet.

Investigations continue to clarify the circumstances of his fall, which authorities have initially deemed accidental. The attention drawn by the incident highlights not only Shklyarov's incredible talent but also the vulnerabilities faced by artists juggling the physical demands of their profession.

Reports indicated Shklyarov's falling incident was captured on CCTV, reinforcing the tragic randomness of it all. Colleagues describe him as vibrant and joyous, showcasing the finer aspects of ballet through his performances. Indeed, his loss resonates deeply not only within the Mariinsky Theatre but around the globe, leaving behind a legacy of grace and inspiration.
