Valeriy Karpin has officially left his post as head coach of FC Rostov, as confirmed by the club's press service on February 25, 2025. This decision, which Karpin described as difficult, stems from his need to focus entirely on the Russian national team, where he currently serves as head coach.
“Today is not easy for me — I leave the position of head coach of FC Rostov. This decision was not easy for us, as during my time here, the club and the city became truly dear to me! At the moment, the situation is such I need to fully devote myself to the national team of the country — the Russian national team!” Karpin stated.
Karpin's coaching career with FC Rostov began on December 19, 2017, leading the team through several seasons until his initial departure on August 2, 2021. He made his return to the club on March 10, 2022, where he successfully juggled his duties with both FC Rostov and the national team. Under his guidance, the club managed to achieve notable positions, culminating with their current standing of 7th place and earning 26 points after the fall season.
His leadership, described as full of ups and downs, was pivotal for Rostov, fostering not just competitive seasons but also strengthening the bond between the club and its supporters. “I want to thank everyone who has been with me during this challenging path and also apologize to those whose hopes and expectations I did not justify. We had our highs and lows, but I always felt and appreciated your support and trust,” Karpin added.
Following Karpin's departure, 43-year-old Spanish coach Jonathan Alba has been appointed as his successor. Alba previously served as Karpin's chief analyst from 2018 until they both transitioned to the national team together in 2021 and later returned to Rostov last year. His experience, both with the club and on the national level, positions him as a promising candidate to lead the team moving forward.
“Valeriy Georgievich Karpin leaves the position of head coach of FC Rostov. This difficult decision is dictated by the necessity to focus fully on the work of the Russian national team,” stated Artashes Arutyunyan, the President of FC Rostov.
Currently, Rostov is poised for future matches as they prepare for the next round of the Russian Premier League, with their first game back scheduled against FC Dynamo Moscow on March 2, 2025. This transition period presents both challenge and opportunity for the club as they continue to navigate the ups and downs of competitive football.
