USC Trojans Defeat Texas A&M Aggies 35-31

The thrilling Las Vegas Bowl showcased dramatic comebacks and pivotal performances from both teams.

The 2024 SRS Distribution Las Vegas Bowl was nothing short of spectacular as the USC Trojans overcame the Texas A&M Aggies with a last-minute victory, finalizing the game with a score of 35-31. The match unfolded at Allegiant Stadium, attracting fans and bettors alike, eager to see how both teams would perform under the unfamiliar circumstances of numerous player exits and transfer portal entries.

USC entered the bowl game with significant gaps on their roster, having witnessed several key players entering the transfer portal. Among those missing was quarterback Miller Moss, who left for Louisville, along with several other offensive threats like wide receivers Zachariah Branch, Duce Robinson, and running back Quinten Joyner. This prompted USC to turn over the football to sophomore quarterback Jayden Maiava, who had been thrust under center following Moss’s departure.

On the other hand, Texas A&M also struggled with player losses. The Aggies had their own challenges going through the transfer portal, including the absence of starting quarterback Jaylen Henderson and defensive standout Nic Scouton. With Marcel Reed leading the charge for the Aggies under difficult circumstances, the stage was set for this pivotal matchup.

At the start of the game, Texas A&M quickly demonstrated their intent with aggressive plays. The Aggies were on the board first, thanks to Reed’s touchdown pass to Noah Thomas, giving Texas A&M a 7-0 lead. They continued to capitalize on early turnovers committed by USC, including two interceptions thrown by Maiava, which stymied the Trojans’ drive.

Midway through the second quarter, the momentum shifted as USC seized their opportunity. Maiava orchestrated a successful drive culminating with a touchdown pass to Ja’Kobi Lane, leveling the score at 7-7 and providing the Trojans with much-needed confidence. Both defenses put up stiff resistance, exchanging turnovers and three-and-out possessions as the game progressed.

Texas A&M responded with multiple scoring plays, with Reed throwing two more touchdown passes to put the Aggies up 24-14 by the end of the third quarter. Yet, USC, showcasing their resilience and determination, fought back. Maiava connected again with Lane, narrowing the score to 24-21 as the final minutes of the match loomed.

Going down to the wire, the final quarter saw extensive drama. USC managed to tie and eventually take the lead at 28-24 with another pass from Maiava to Lane, but Texas A&M quickly countered, regaining their edge at 31-28 with Reed’s rushing touchdown.

With only seconds left on the clock, the Trojans found themselves needing one final push. Maiava led his team down the field with impressive composure. His consistent completions set up one last chance, resulting in a celebrated touchdown pass to tight end Kyle Ford with just 8 seconds remaining. The score shot USC to victory, marking the game at 35-31.

The win awarded USC the bowl victory, bringing closure to their tumultuous season. Fans rejoiced, celebrating not only the championship but the show of skill and the ability to prevail against adversities. The post-game scene was filled with players sharing hugs and celebrating their success, emphasizing the bond formed throughout the challenging season.

While the Trojans cleared hurdles with missing starters, the question marks surrounding both teams entering the game will linger. With significant roster changes anticipated as players evaluate their futures, the performance showcased on the field will remain a decisive factor for upcoming seasons. This match was not just a game; it meant so much more to the athletes, the coaches, and their loyal followers.

For the Aggies, this loss prompts reflection on how they can build for the next season. While there were glimpses of brilliance, particularly from Reed, the disappointment of falling short looms large as they head back for off-season assessments.

With bowl season closing and collegiate careers on the line, the stakes felt particularly high this year. The Las Vegas Bowl stands as a symbol of how unpredictability reigns supreme, leaving fans and teams eagerly anticipating the next football campaign.
