Squid Game Season 2 Set For Release With New Filming Locations

The anticipated second season returns with familiar faces, new cast members, and key filming sites across South Korea.

The anticipation for Season 2 of Netflix’s groundbreaking series Squid Game is reaching fever pitch as fans eagerly await the continuation of the gripping tale where childhood games morph dangerously for life-changing rewards. Since its debut, the series has transformed the entertainment scene, drawing viewers deeply engrossed with its critique on social inequality and brutal class structures.

The sequel is set to premiere on December 26, 2024, featuring only seven episodes, heightening excitement surrounding the new season. This time, viewers will see the return of familiar faces as well as the introduction of new characters, reflecting the series' evolution. Lee Jung-jae reprises his role as the beloved protagonist, Seong Gi-hun, who last left audiences on the edge of their seats, self-purposed to confront the sinister games again. Alongside him, Lee Byung-hun returns as the enigmatic antagonist, the Front Man, ensuring the tension remains as palpable as ever.

Yet, it is the recently unveiled character of Hyun-ju, also known as Player 120, which has stirred up conversations within the fandom. Initially portrayed by Park Sung-hoon, controversy has arisen due to Hyun-ju being depicted as a transgender character without being played by a trans actor, reflecting larger societal challenges within South Korea's entertainment industry. Hwang Dong-hyuk, the series' creator, is aware of the cultural sensitivity around the casting issue. He expressed to TV Guide, "When we researched, there are close to no actors who are openly trans... the LGBTQ community is rather still marginalized and more neglected, which is heartbreaking.” Despite the debates surrounding representation, Park's performance has received accolades, earning Hyun-ju the status of fan-favorite.

Season 1 concluded with Gi-hun making the pivotal decision to confront the organization behind the brutal games, leaving audiences vested and questioning the potential fates of returning and new characters alike. New players joining include Myung-gi (Player 333), Dae-ho (Player 388), Yong-sik (Player 007), and several others, each set to challenge the existing power dynamics within the gruesome game framework.

Turning to the filming locations where this psychological thriller is brought to life, Season 2 showcases several iconic spots across South Korea. The production has taken advantage of their country’s diverse scenery and vibrant settings, enhancing the storytelling with real-life backdrops. One of the standout locations is the vast and busy Seongapdo Island, noted for its isolation — adding depth and eeriness to the game setting. Actual filming was done here, with the trailer teasing moments of detective Wi Ha-jun exploring the island’s mysteries.

Filming also prominently takes place at Daejeon Expo Science Park, where extensive movie sets have been constructed. This amusement park, popular with both locals and tourists, features platforms where the major scenes will take place, including the notorious ‘maze corridors’ and dormitory designs which will appear more expansive and intricately details compared to the previous season. Hwang confirmed the expansion of the sets, saying, "The new colors and designs will play key roles during game sequences, amplifying tension and conflict among participants.”

Lastly, the series returned to Gimpo International Airport under the creative pretense of busy terminals, adding layers to its visually compelling world where players navigate both physical and emotional challenges. Its blend of art and realism offers viewers an immersive experience, deepening their connection to the underlying messages of Squid Game.

While the show has garnered substantial acclaim, the story of Player 120 reflects real-life struggles faced by many transgender individuals. The character of Hyun-ju parallels the actual experiences of Byun Hui-su, the first known transgender soldier of South Korea, who faced discrimination and tragic consequences due to their gender identity. This connection adds depth to the narrative, highlighting social issues woven intricately around human experiences.

Viewers are left with bittersweet excitement as they prepare for another plunge back to the sinister game world presented by the beautifully crafted narrative on Squid Game. The second season promises new twists, complex characters, and the opportunity to explore the various layers of survival, ethics, and humanity under extreme pressure.
