US Resumes Supply Of Modernized GLSDB Bombs To Ukraine

The United States is providing upgraded long-range bombs to Ukraine amid concerns over depleted missile stocks.

The United States is set to resume the delivery of Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bombs (GLSDB) to Ukraine, equipped with upgrades intended to neutralize the growing threat of Russian electronic warfare systems. This announcement marks a significant development as the GLSDBs, which can be employed to hit targets up to 161 kilometers away, will soon be deployed on the battlefield amid concerns over depleted stocks of similar-range munitions, particularly the Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS).

According to sources cited by Reuters, this renewed supply chain reflects both the advanced state of the current battlefield dynamics and the urgent battlefield needs of Ukraine as it continues to counter Russian aggression. Stockpiles of GLSDBs are reportedly already located within Europe, setting the stage for immediate operational use. The last deployment of this specific ordnance by Ukraine took place several months ago, prior to the upgrades.

Recent testing has shown promising results, with 19 GLSDB bombs being launched to assess the effectiveness of the modifications made. These upgrades included reinforcing internal connections within the weapon, which significantly boosts its resilience against jamming systems utilized by Russian forces. Russian interference had previously hampered the operational reliability of several GLSDBs, limiting their effectiveness against intended targets.

Various reports from military sources detail the challenges faced by Ukraine’s forces concerning their missile stocks. An American official indicated to the Associated Press earlier this year the severity of the ATACMS depletion, noting Ukraine had exhausted its supply by the end of January 2025, with fewer than 40 missiles being provided throughout the engagement. The need for munitions with increased ranges has become especially pressing, as the US-supplied GMLRS rockets have limited operational reach, prompting calls for more advanced weaponry.

To meet battlefield requirements, the Boeing Company has advanced its GLSDB project, which merges the precision-guided GBU-39 with the M26 rocket. This unique combination allows for strikes beyond conventional artillery capabilities and is part of the military equipment purchased under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which has seen nearly $33.2 billion allocated for defense supplies to Kyiv.

Given the strategic significance of property logistics and supply lines, the GLSDB is expected to play a pivotal role as Ukraine positions itself against Russian forces. The anticipated introduction of these bombs also coincides with increased operational mapping of Russian infrastructure, enhancing Ukraine's ability to disrupt enemy logistics effectively.

Discussions within the Biden administration initiated the delivery of GLSDBs last year, which had been delayed amid fears of escalation. With the recent updates and strategic needs intensified due to the conflict's progression, American resolve to assist Ukraine translates not only to military aid but also renewed diplomatic engagements. Notably, President Trump's administration also agreed to resume military assistance and intelligence sharing with Ukraine following logistical discussions aimed at negotiating potential ceasefire terms.

The challenges posed by Russian jamming systems necessitate the need for effective countermeasures, and the rollout of the upgraded GLSDBs aims to provide Ukrainian forces with the upper hand. With assessments showing vulnerabilities to previous versions of the GLSDB, enhancements are being met with cautious optimism about their future usage.

All eyes now turn to the effectiveness of these weapons once they are reintroduced to the battlefield and the impact they may have as conflicts persist. The combination of technological advancement and strategic military planning will undoubtedly shape combat situations moving forward.

The positive developments for Ukraine reflect continued support from the US and its allies, signaling commitment to bolstering Ukrainian defenses. The presence of GLSDBs signifies not just material support but also the interconnectedness of military and diplomatic efforts amid this extended conflict. With stockpiles already arriving, the re-escalation of military aid from the US ensures Ukraine remains equipped to face its adversaries.

While the future remains uncertain, the modernization of weaponry and strategic preparations herald newly invigorated efforts to capture momentum and regain operational ground against opposing forces. The commitment to enhancing the capabilities of the Ukrainian military remains firm, as evidenced by the forthcoming implementation of upgraded GLSDB systems.
