UNESCO Declares February 9 World Greek Language Day

Prime Minister Mitsotakis celebrates UNESCO's recognition of the Greek language and its cultural significance.

Greece's Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has hailed UNESCO's recent designation of February 9 as World Greek Language Day as a significant milestone in the nation's cultural diplomacy efforts. The announcement, made by the UNESCO Executive Board on April 14, 2025, recognizes the enduring influence and historical importance of the Greek language.

In a heartfelt message posted on Facebook, Mitsotakis expressed joy at the global recognition of the Greek language, stating, "Greeks, wherever they are, welcome with true joy the establishment of February 9 as World Greek Language Day by UNESCO." He emphasized that this day will now be celebrated annually around the world, honoring the language that has transmitted the values of a nation that gave birth to democracy and laid the foundations of philosophy and science.

The Prime Minister noted that the joint decision by 88 countries to commemorate this day serves as a testament to the international esteem of the Greek language. "The whole world will now celebrate, each year, the very language through which the values of the nation that gave birth to democracy, and laid the foundations of philosophy and science, have been transmitted across centuries," he said.

Mitsotakis also highlighted the symbolic significance of February 9, pointing out that it marks the anniversary of the death of Dionysios Solomos, the Corfu-born poet who authored the "Hymn to Liberty," Greece's national anthem. Solomos passed away on this date in 1857, making it a poignant choice for honoring the Greek language.

The decision to establish World Greek Language Day is seen as a victory for Greece's cultural diplomacy, with Mitsotakis stating, "Greeks, far and wide, welcome with heartfelt joy the designation of February 9 as ‘World Greek Language Day’ by UNESCO. This is a success of our cultural diplomacy and a testament to the timeless, international appeal of the language of Homer."

The recognition has been widely celebrated across Greece, with the Greek Foreign Ministry and various political leaders expressing their support. The designation is not only a nod to the historical significance of the Greek language but also a reflection of its contemporary relevance in a globalized world.

February 9 was initially designated as “International Greek Language Day” by the Greek Parliament back in 2018, but this new recognition by UNESCO elevates its status and underscores the importance of preserving and promoting the Greek language worldwide.

As Greece continues to navigate the complexities of cultural diplomacy in an increasingly interconnected world, the establishment of World Greek Language Day serves as a reminder of the rich heritage and contributions of the Greek language to global culture. The decision is expected to foster greater interest in learning and using the language, thereby ensuring its legacy for future generations.

In conclusion, the designation of February 9 as World Greek Language Day is not just a celebration of a language; it is a celebration of a culture that has profoundly influenced humanity. As countries around the globe prepare to honor this day annually, it is a moment of pride for Greeks everywhere, a testament to the resilience and enduring legacy of their language.
