Ukraine Strikes Back With Cruise Missiles Against Russia

Recent military developments highlight shifting tactics and humanitarian struggles amid the Ukraine conflict

The conflict between Ukraine and Russia continues to be marked by fierce military developments, with recent reports highlighting significant actions on various fronts. The weeks from November 13 to 20 saw heightened activity particularly around the Kurakhove front and the emergence of new threats related to the Velyka Novosilka area.

Notably, the intensity of fighting has shifted over time, showing both escalations and relative calm at different fronts. Reports indicate a drop in clashes primarily due to diminished Russian assaults toward Kurakhove. Nevertheless, areas like Kurakhove and Pokrovsk are still severely impacted, with Russian forces leading the charge, accounting for approximately 60% of attacks. Despite fewer assaults across the board, the battle for Chasiv Yar has seen significant developments, with Russian troops making gains.

One of the troubling new fronts forming is around Velyka Novosilka, where aggressive maneuvers by Russian troops have been noted. They have executed tactics from both head-on and flanking approaches, attempting to capture the area surrounding Makarivka. Even though Ukrainian forces managed to reclaim this position briefly, the push continues as Russian troops breached initially secured territories like Rivnopil and gained ground near the Velyka Novosilka-Hulyaipole highway.

Simultaneously, the Russian offensive near Kurakhove seems bogged down, illustrating the challenging dynamics of warfare on the ground. Russian forces are stuck engaging Ukrainian defenses, experiencing only minimal territorial advances, as evidenced by nearly thirty percent decrease in their clashes compared to previous weeks. Ukrainian units have accurately barricaded their positions, especially after recent territorial losses.

Further developments indicate the precarious position of the Ukrainian forces which face the looming threat of encirclement. With Russian advances toward Uspenivka, which is pivotal for logistics, Ukrainian defenders must retain control here to avert isolation. The situation on the eastern side remains fluid as combat rages, particularly around key locations like Antonivka and Illinka, which are under continual threat of invasion.

Curiously, the story does not end there. The Pokrovsk area, responsible for nearly 250 battles weekly, maintains relative stability, even as Russian forces continue probing defenses at various points. Their advances have been unremarkable, with reports indicating only small territorial gains, which raises questions about the coordination and effectiveness of Russian strategies.

Meanwhile, another intense struggle is taking place around Toretsk, where fighting persists over virtually every street block. Ukrainian forces are still holding parts of this strategic location, but Russian troops are fiercely contesting around Zabalka and Nelipivka, leading to substantial civilian evacuations amid the chaos.

But what about the identity behind the conflict? Russian paratroopers recently made headlines for their unexpected infiltration of Kupyansk under the guise of Ukrainian uniforms. While their attempts to secure footholds were thwarted, it’s indicative of the cunning tactics employed by Russian military planning.

On the technologies of warfare front, recent news indicated the use of advanced missile systems. Reports from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) revealed the first apparent deployment of Western-supplied cruise missiles by Ukraine against Russian positions. The missile strikes, recorded on video, targeted Russian headquarters near the Kursk region, showcasing the broadening scope of Ukraine's military engagement.

The missiles involved, Storm Shadow missiles, provide Ukraine with the ability to strike targets over 250 kilometers away, significantly affecting the dynamics on the battlefield. Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov proposed Ukraine's capacity for counter-attacks but withheld specifics on missile deployments, spearheading discussions on military transparency and operational security.

While engaging on the battlefield isn’t the only narrative, the humanitarian aspect offers chilling reminders of the consequences of war. Ukrainian leaders reported significant civilian evacuations from contested regions, with over 1.17 million people moved from conflict zones just within the Donetsk region, illustrating the dire humanitarian crisis exacerbated by military actions. More than 300,000 civilians remain under the shadow of Russian territorial ambitions.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently urged the public to avoid panic amid fears of escalated conflict following Ukraine's military actions. He contended panicking merely aids Russian narratives and creates disorder among the populace. The President’s messages come as Russian forces launch continuous assaults on eastern frontline positions, with heavy artillery support.

Given this turbulent backdrop, the role of international aid cannot be understated. The recent arms package from the United States, valued at $275 million, includes pivotal resources such as drones and artillery shells, which are pivotal for Ukrainian defensive measures. This continual support emphasizes the relationship between military operations and the larger geopolitical chess game being played.

But the history of Russian-Ukrainian relations adds layers to the current conflict. Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel recently reflected on her past hesitations surrounding NATO's expansion, admitting fears of Russian retaliation shaped her decisions to moderate Ukraine’s aspirations to fast-track NATO membership. Today, Ukraine's NATO ambitions remain central to Zelensky's strategy as air defenses are expected to intensify against potential retaliatory strikes.

What remains clear is the volatile frontline dynamics exacerbated by recent military strategies and the overarching humanitarian crises reshaping lives on both sides. Moving forward, as the conflict shifts back and forth across war-torn regions, the focus on new military strategies and international diplomatic maneuvers will remain pivotal.

Every development rings alarm bells for civilians caught within the crossfire and fortifies narratives shaping future engagements. Whether through military assessments, humanitarian responses, or the verbatim reminders from world leaders, the story continues to evolve as more dimensions of this conflict come to light.
