James O’Hagan, Uisce Éireann’s Water Network Operations Manager, articulated the importance of these improvements. He stated, “The increase in water temperatures during the summer months leads to intermittent instances of discolouration on the Cavan Hill water network. Last year our team rolled out a 16-week targeted flushing programme, completed in June 2024, which proved effective in reducing instances of discolouration. The pilot project commenced in September 2024 to find an enduring solution.”

The pilot study yielded promising results, showing effectiveness at significantly reducing manganese levels, paving the way for upgrading the water treatment system with new filtration technology. The necessary project design is currently underway, preparing for subsequent implementation phases, which will also require environmental assessments and local planning permissions.

The commitment to maintenance and improvement is clear from Uisce Éireann's continued engagement with local representatives and stakeholders. Mr. O’Hagan emphasized even the importance of proactive measures: “While the design and planning of the Cavan Hill Water Treatment Plant upgrade project is on-going, we will take a proactive approach to minimising incidences of seasonal discolouration by scheduling flushing programmes when ambient temperatures are forecast to rise.”
