DUBAI – The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially declared January 1, 2025, as a public holiday, allowing both government and private employees to celebrate the New Year with the day off. This announcement was made by the Federal Authority for Government Human Resources (FAHR) and the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE).
According to the FAHR, all government offices will be closed on New Year’s Day, resuming regular operations on Thursday, January 2, 2025. MOHRE also confirmed the public holiday for private sector employees, marking this day as the first public holiday of the new year.
This holiday is part of the UAE’s official list of 2025 public holidays, which consists of thirteen days, allowing residents to enjoy quality time with family and friends. The first three days of Shawwal, following Ramadan, are reserved for Eid Al Fitr, which will also see extended breaks.
Notably, recent changes to public holiday policies dictate holidays falling on weekends will not shift to weekdays. Each emirate retains the authority to declare additional holidays as deemed necessary. This new rule ensures employees have clear expectations for their time off and can organize their schedules accordingly.
The FAHR's announcement was shared widely via social media platforms, including the authority's official Twitter account, emphasizing the importance of planning. "The initiative ensures both public and private sector employees have an opportunity to celebrate the New Year, fostering a culture of inclusivity across the UAE’s diverse workforce," said the FAHR.
Government officials have highlighted the importance of such holidays for maintaining work-life balance within the community, contributing to overall productivity. By allowing everyone the chance to celebrate together, the holiday strengthens ties among residents, regardless of their backgrounds.
The elaboration on 2025's public holidays, including the clarified Eid Al Fitr period, portrays the UAE’s commitment to providing substantial breaks throughout the year. Emphasizing fair treatment across both public and private sectors, this holiday announcement signifies the nation’s agenda to prioritize employee well-being.
January 1 will not only mark the beginning of the new year but also serve as a reminder of the importance of inclusivity and collective celebration among the diverse population of the UAE. With various festivities planned, residents are encouraged to enjoy the holiday and reflect on the year's opportunities.
Looking forward to 2025, the announcement signals the UAE's ambition to offer both leisure and joy to its workforce, something that's become increasingly important as global conversations shift toward work-life balance and employee satisfaction. The New Year’s holiday will provide everyone the much-needed opportunity to step away from routine and celebrate afresh.
