Twiggy Reflects On Fame And Family History

The iconic model shares heartfelt stories as her documentary nears release.

Twiggy, the iconic model whose career took off during the 1960s, captivated audiences once again during her recent appearance on the BBC's The One Show. On March 3, 2025, she joined director Sadie Frost to discuss their new documentary titled simply Twiggy, set to hit theaters on March 7. Viewers were not only interested in what the film has to offer but were also taken aback by Twiggy's youthful appearance.

Until her recent media engagements, Twiggy—whose real name is Lesley Lawson—has remained somewhat of a recluse. She took the opportunity on The One Show to recount significant events from her life and career, including her humorous yet nerve-wracking experience with filmmaker Woody Allen during her first visit to New York as a teenager.

Reflecting on the interview, Twiggy explained, "It was my first trip to America and I went in after The Beatles, so I was part of the British invasion...[] I have only just landed, I have only seen the runway!" This moment served as both intimidating and comedic, as she was faced with unexpected philosophical questions from Allen during their audience-interview. "Somebody was making a documentary on my trip, and he put me together with this new, young, unknown comedian, jazz player to interview me in front of an audience. His opening question to me was 'What do you think of serious matters?' I kind of go, 'Well, what?' And then he said, 'Who is your favourite philosopher?' at which point my whole stomach fell to my knees," she humorously recounted.

Despite initial panic, Twiggy turned the question back on Allen, which showcased her quick thinking. "I didn’t plan to, I was in panic, and it came out of panic. I just didn’t want to cry," she candidly shared. Her relatable admission struck a chord with fans, who took to social media to express their admiration not just for her appearance but also for her authenticity.

Several viewers praised her youthful looks, with one tweeting, "#TheOneShow Twiggy is stunning! How does she never age? Can't believe she's 75?? Looks more like 55. Seriously, what's her secret?" Another expressed their admiration by declaring, "I LOVE Twiggy," solidifying her place as a beloved icon.

Beyond her wit and charm, Twiggy's heartfelt reflections on her upbringing added depth to the conversation. She shared the wisdom imparted by her father, describing him as "very down to earth, very grounded, very loving," and explained how he encouraged her to pursue modeling. "I had to get permission from him to leave school. He was amazing because he said, 'Listen, this might only last for three months, but if I don’t give you permission to leave, you might end up resenting me, even hATING me.' It was quite wise, actually. He was always my main man," said Twiggy, evoking fond memories of her family support.

This documentary marks the first time Twiggy has publicly shared such intimate tales from her life. Her new film features interviews with notable figures, including Joanna Lumley and Paul McCartney, as she charts her rise to fame and the ups and downs of her career. Throughout the film, viewers can expect to see archival footage juxtaposed with fresh insights from Twiggy herself, telling her story for the first time.

The documentary is directed by Frost, who previously gained attention for her work on the film Quant. This project continues Frost's exploration of female icons within the fashion and entertainment industries. According to reviews, the film captures Twiggy's down-to-earth nature and engages with the viewer—presenting her not just as the glamor icon from the swinging sixties but as someone who has stayed true to her roots.

Twiggy’s appearance at such events—as she participates actively on social media—shows her resilience and willingness to confront both past challenges and contemporary scrutiny head-on. Her life, marked by collaboration with cultural contemporaries, showcases her ability to adapt and maintain relevance over the decades.

Despite having faced challenges, including relationship struggles, Twiggy has emerged as one of those enduring celebrities, particularly noteworthy for her enduring connection with her fans. Hers is not just the story of fame; it is one of persistence, talent, and narrative evolution over time.

Viewers are not only invited to witness Twiggy’s glamorous past but also to engage with the complexity of her present and future. With upcoming appearances and insights from the documentary, audiences are reminded of her status as an icon who has shaped fashion, music, and film.

Frost’s documentary holds significance not just as film history but as part of British cultural evolution. With Twiggy continuing to resist retirement and remaining active, her story resonates with those who see her as more than just the face of fashion but as one of the last living links to historical cultural shifts.

Fans can eagerly await the film release, which plans to bring broader stories and familiar faces to the forefront. Twiggy's documentary hits cinemas nationwide on March 7, offering viewers both nostalgia and inspiration.
