Deadline Approaches For REAL ID Requirement For Travelers

With the May 7 deadline nearing, officials warn about the need for REAL ID compliance to avoid travel complications.

PHILADELPHIA - Transportation officials are sounding the alarm as the deadline for obtaining REAL ID-compliant identification rapidly approaches.

At a news conference on March 3, 2025, at Philadelphia International Airport, officials announced travelers will need to possess a REAL ID driver’s license or another form of federally accepted identification, such as a valid passport or military ID, if they wish to board domestic flights after May 7, 2025. "May 7, which is 64 days away, you will need a Real ID-compliant driver's license or REAL ID-compliant identification card to board a domestic flight," said Jana Tidwell, the Manager of Public Affairs for PA and DE AAA.

The REAL ID initiative stems from Congress's mandate for stricter identification standards enacted as part of the REAL ID Act of 2005, which aimed to tighten security following the September 11 attacks. The program faced several delays, including those related to staffing issues tied to the COVID-19 pandemic, but is now set for enforcement.

If you're planning to travel, it's best to act swiftly; the process can take possibly weeks. To obtain your REAL ID, you'll need to visit your local state driver’s license center, bringing specific documentation to prove your identity, address, and social security number. Required documents include: proof of identity (such as a valid U.S. passport or birth certificate), proof of social security number (your social security card or another official document with your full number), and two proofs of your current Pennsylvania address (these can be utility bills, vehicle registration, or official correspondence from the state). Those who have legally changed their names will also need to provide documentation for these changes.

"REAL ID is a coordinated effort by the federal government to improve the reliability and accuracy of driver licenses and identification cards," explained Gerardo Spero, TSA’s Federal Security Director for Pennsylvania. "The improvements are intended to inhibit terrorists’ ability to evade detection by using fraudulent identification."

Despite these mandates, Pennsylvanians are not obligated to obtain a REAL ID for purposes such as voting, accessing hospitals, or applying for federal benefits. Nevertheless, if you want to use your state identification for air travel, securing this upgrade is necessary. A passport can substitute for REAL ID, acting as your "golden ticket" for boarding flights.

The urgency of complying with the REAL ID requirement cannot be stressed enough, especially for individuals who currently do not possess passports. "I'm here to tell you ... it’s gonna be ugly," Tidwell cautioned. She highlighted how travelers might find themselves stuck at airport checkpoints without proper identification if they delay getting their REAL ID.

To help residents meet the approaching deadline, PennDOT is offering extended service at select regional driver license centers on Mondays, including March 10, March 17, April 14, and May 5, from 10 AM to 2 PM. Some locations will issue same-day REAL IDs. This provision aims to alleviate the anticipated rush toward the end of the compliance period, allowing Pennsylvanians to receive their IDs efficiently.

Travelers throughout the state have expressed mixed opinions on the necessity of obtaining REAL IDs. Resident Heidi Meyers said, "I'm not gonna get a REAL ID because I already have a passport, and I already paid, so I don't want to incur the additional expense." On the other hand, traveler Ivan Juzang stated, "It's all about actually trying to be in the shortest line," conveying his intentions to secure his REAL ID well before the deadline.

With air travel expected to increase as warmer weather approaches, PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll emphasized the necessity for proper travel planning, stating, "With federal REAL ID enforcement beginning on May 7, your travel planning should include making sure you have proper ID to fly." This proactive reminder aims to encourage those who might overlook obtaining the new identification.

For those who may feel this requirement does not impact them, officials warn against complacency. Situations can arise where individuals might find the need to fly unexpectedly, making it imperative to secure necessary identification long before facing any restrictions at airport checkpoints.

Complying with REAL ID regulations doesn't just concern air travel—identification is required for entry to military installations and certain facilities where IDs are mandated.
