Trump Initiates Telephone Diplomacy With Putin And Zelensky

Former president's calls aim to facilitate discussions on Ukraine peace negotiations

Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently engaged in significant telephone diplomacy, speaking with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to address the continuing conflict between their countries. These calls, which took place on February 12, 2024, mark a notable effort by Trump to facilitate discussions aimed at bringing peace to Ukraine.

According to Trump, his conversation with Putin was "long and very productive." He highlighted the discussions, which reportedly lasted almost one and a half hours, covering various pressing topics including Ukraine, the Middle East, energy, artificial intelligence, and trade relations. Trump disclosed via his Truth Social platform, "We both agreed we want to stop the millions of deaths happening in the war between Russia and Ukraine," showcasing his commitment to finding common ground.

Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, corroborated Trump's account, noting the call's length and stating, "President Putin invited President Trump to visit Moscow and expressed his readiness to receive American officials to discuss mutual interests, including the situation in Ukraine." The dialogue initiated by Trump seemed to underline the urgency of negotiating peace as he declared, "I firmly believe the efforts underway will lead to successful resolutions soon."

Immediately after speaking with Putin, Trump reached out to Zelensky, engaging him for approximately one hour. Zelensky confirmed the conversation through his Telegram channel, mentioning, "Just spoke with Donald Trump. A prolonged dialogue. About the possibility of achieving peace. We are ready to work together at the team level." This acknowledgment signals Zelensky's openness to collaboration as both leaders discussed Ukraine's readiness to explore sustainable paths for peace.

Further, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the interest Trump showed concerning potential technological partnerships, particularly highlighting "drones and other modern productions" as key areas for cooperation. He stated, "We are defining our common steps with America to stop Russian aggression and guarantee reliable, lasting peace." This communication reveals Ukraine's desire to strengthen alliances and gain support against external threats.

The discussions were framed positively from both sides. Trump emphasized, "We discussed many war-related topics, but primarily the upcoming meeting scheduled for Munich, where Vice President J.D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead the delegation." This mention of upcoming diplomatic meetings reflects Trump's strategic approach as he seeks potential breakthroughs at international engagements.

At the same time, the prospect of direct negotiations has gained traction, as Trump appointed Secretary of State Marco Rubio, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, National Security Advisor Michael Waltz, and Special Envoy Steve Whitcoff to lead American efforts in discussions for resolving the Ukraine crisis.

Peskov echoed the sentiment for continued dialogue and highlighted the necessity of addressing the root causes of the conflict. He stated, "President Putin mentioned the importance of eliminating the root causes of the conflict and agreed with Trump on the notion of working together for long-term peace through negotiations." Such affirmations from both sides indicate potential progress and the willingness to cooperate beyond public rhetoric.

Reflecting on the broader historical narrative, Trump remarked, "We both reminisced about the great history of our nations and how we fought together during World War II," emphasizing the overarching importance of unity and collaboration—a reminder of past alliances even during times of conflict.

Despite this diplomatic overture, both Trump and Zelensky did not disclose specific conditions or preliminary agreements concerning the negotiations. This absence of details might invite varying interpretations from observers, particularly on both sides of the geopolitical divide. While there are many hopeful signs, logistical challenges and deep-seated mistrust remain prominent barriers to achieving peace.

Closing his remarks concerning the rapprochement with Zelensky, Trump quoted, "I hope the results of this meeting will be positive. It is time to end this absurd war, which has resulted in mass and utterly unnecessary deaths and destruction. God bless the people of Russia and Ukraine!" This last expression reflects Trump's humanitarian stance and commitment to shifting the focus toward stability and peace rather than continued hostility.

At the heart of these developments lies the prospect of peace negotiations and strategic partnerships aimed at ending violence and establishing secure cooperation between nations. All eyes will remain on forthcoming meetings and initiatives as leaders continue to navigate complex international relations freckled with myriad challenges.
