Trial Rescheduled For Accused Trump Assassin Ryan Routh

Ryan Routh's case delayed to September 2025 as defense seeks more time for evidence review and potential insanity plea.

The trial of Ryan Wesley Routh, accused of attempting to assassinate President-elect Donald Trump, has been postponed to September 8, 2025, after U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon granted the defense additional time to prepare. The judge previously set the trial to begin on February 10, 2025, but the defense argued for more time, citing the need to review substantial amounts of evidence, including videos and digital data.

Routh, 58, from Hawaii, has pleaded not guilty to several serious charges, including attempting to assassinate a major presidential candidate, assaulting a federal officer, and violating firearms regulations. According to prosecutors, Routh allegedly spent weeks planning the assassination and attempted to carry out his plot on September 15, 2024, as Trump played golf at his West Palm Beach retreat.

Details surrounding the case are chilling. During the fateful day, Routh reportedly aimed an AK-47 style rifle at Trump through the bushes near the golf course. He was spotted by Secret Service agents who opened fire at him—though no one was hit. Panicking under gunfire, Routh dropped his weapon and fled the scene. He was arrested on the interstate shortly after, having evaded capture, and is currently being held without bail.

Judge Cannon, who previously dismissed federal charges against Trump related to classified documents, acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations as she approved the trial delay, stating the defense needed more time to examine hundreds of hours of police body camera and surveillance footage, as well as data from Routh's vast array of electronic devices, which includes 17 cellphones. The defense must announce any intention to pursue an insanity plea by February 3, 2025, with subsequent deadlines for visits to the crime scene set for February 27.

Prosecutors allege Routh carefully plotted the assassination scheme. They indicated he had left behind incriminatory evidence, including notes expressing his intentions, one of which stated, "This was an assassination attempt on Donald Trump but I failed you. I tried my best and gave it all the gumption I could muster. It is up to you now to finish the job; and I will offer $150,000 to whomever can complete the job." This grave statement reinforces the seriousness of the charges he faces.

Routh’s case is particularly high-profile due to its timing and the nature of the allegations. Just two months before Routh’s attempted attack, Trump had survived another assassination attempt where he was shot and injured during a rally. The Secret Service recognized failures leading to Trump being shot previously but asserted their protocols effectively prevented escalation during Routh's attack.

Routh's legal team has expressed concerns about the legal ramifications associated with this case’s high profile and the various jurors' perceptions. They have requested additional reviews of the evidence and even suggested the volume of discovery material is extraordinary and complex due to Routh’s mental health state and previous incidents.

The trial’s outcome bears significant weight, not just for Routh himself but also for the broader political climate and election security measures. Following the rulings made by Judge Cannon, the next steps will involve strategic planning by both the defense and prosecution. High-stakes pretrial conferences are set for August 2025, leading up to the trial date.

Given the gravity of the charges Routh faces, he could receive life imprisonment if convicted. Both the case and its timeline are being closely monitored across the nation, highlighting the persistent and alarming nature of political violence. The public anticipates details as this case approaches the courtroom, anticipating hearings, and procedural moves from both sides as they build up to the September trial.
