Train Collision In Murmansk Oblast Leaves One Dead

Passengers Recount Horrors as Search and Rescue Efforts Continue

A tragic collision between passenger and freight trains in Russia's Murmansk Oblast has resulted in the death of one woman and increased injuries reported among travelers. Reports indicate approximately 17 individuals are suffering from injuries, including three children, creating shockwaves among the community.

The incident occurred at about 16:15 Moscow time near the Knyazhaya station when the passenger train traveling from Murmansk to Saint Petersburg collided with stationary freight train cars. At the time, the passenger train, which carried more than 300 passengers, experienced derailment involving three of its cars.

The casualty of the crash was confirmed by the press service of OAO RZhD, which noted the individual who died was identified as a woman whose name is still being investigated by authorities. Following her death, RZhD has announced plans to compensate the family of the deceased with 2.2 million rubles, alongside insurance coverage from the insurance company SOGAZ. This compensation is intended to provide some support for the victim’s family during this difficult time.

The governor of Murmansk Oblast, Andrey Chibis, announced rescue efforts were underway, including the dispatch of medical teams and helicopters to assist those injured. "We are doing everything to aid the victims of this tragedy," Chibis assured.

Currently, eight individuals have been hospitalized; medical professionals specify two of them are reported to be in severe condition. The updated figure from the health ministry detailed the growing number of those impacted, initially noted as 14 but now recognized as 17, emphasizing the serious nature of the injuries sustained.

Initial findings suggest the cause of the collision could stem from mechanical failure on the freight train. Reports from various sources indicate the freight train experienced issues approximately three hours before the crash, resulting in the train being immobilized due to the broken power receiver. Unfortunately, when the malfunctioning train lost its brakes, it rolled onto the track of the oncoming passenger train, leading to the catastrophic accident.

Following the tragedy, RZhD has promised to refund the ticket prices to all affected passengers and credited 20,000 bonus points to their accounts. For those who sought medical assistance at the scene, they will receive 500,000 rubles from the rail company. Passengers with severe injuries are entitled to one million rubles as part of the compensation for their suffering.

Although rescue efforts are still being carried out, the collision has raised several questions about railroad safety standards and protocols, prompting investigations by the Northwest Transport Prosecutor’s Office. A criminal case has been launched under Article 263 of the Criminal Code of Russia, addressing breaches of traffic safety and rules governing railway transport operations.

Residents of the region are clearly shaken by the event, with many awaiting information on their friends and families aboard the ill-fated train. The news of the collision spread quickly, drawing attention both locally and nationally.

Rail safety remains under scrutiny following previous incidents, and this recent crash is no exception, underscoring the necessity for improvements and rigorous safety checks within the railway customs. Meanwhile, discussions are likely to persist as survivors and relatives come to terms with the aftermath of this tragic incident.

Overall, this incident raises significant concerns about railway operations, urging authorities to revisit and reinforce safety protocols to prevent future tragedies.
