MARTANO – On December 18, 2023, the tragic discovery of a 90-year-old woman was made by emergency responders at her home on Via Enrico Fermi. Firefighters had to force open the door after several days without news from the elderly resident, who was last heard from two days prior. Once inside, officials found the woman lying lifeless on the living room floor, having likely passed away hours earlier.
Reports indicate the elderly woman was set to turn 90 in March 2025. She had been living alone and was described as having two children residing abroad, one each located in Switzerland and Austria. Initial concerns about her wellbeing led to this emergency response once her family realized they had not heard from her.
The event unfolded at approximately 14:30 when first aid workers from 118, Italy's medical emergency service, arrived at her home. After receiving no answer, they sought the assistance of firefighters to gain entry. A crew from the Maglie fire station arrived quickly on the scene and successfully breached the door.
Upon entering, the medical team discovered the elderly woman lying next to a chair, but unfortunately, their attempts to revive her proved futile. The attending physician could only confirm her death. Following standard protocols, local carabinieri also arrived to conduct security checks at the home, ensuring there were no signs of foul play.
Authorities assessed the environment and found everything appeared orderly within the house, ruling out any indication of forced entry or aggression. Given the circumstances, the preliminary investigation suggested the cause of death was likely natural, perhaps due to sudden illness, leading to her fall and inability to call for help, as she lay alone without anyone to assist her.
Following the authorities' evaluation, the judiciary was notified. The woman's body was transported to the mortuary of the "Vito Fazzi" hospital located in Lecce for necessary autopsy procedures, as is routine to ascertain the cause of death and confirm no elements suggested foul play.
