Kustic further praised Pokrivac as a "great football player" who lived for the sport until the very end, highlighting his resilience in overcoming a serious illness that forced him to retire from professional football in 2015.

Pokrivac's battle with Hodgkin's lymphoma, a rare form of cancer, was well-documented. He had shown remarkable courage and determination, returning to the pitch to play for NK Vojnic, where he continued to inspire those around him. His career spanned several notable achievements, including 12 appearances in the Europa League and four in the Champions League.

Dinamo Zagreb, where he played a significant part of his career, released a statement mourning the loss. They said, "With great sadness and disbelief, we received the news of a serious traffic accident in Karlovac, where unfortunately our former player Nikola Pokrivac lost his life. Nikola will forever remain a part of the Dinamo family – as a talented midfielder, a fighter on the field, and a man with a great heart. He played 69 times for the Blues and was involved in four championship titles and three cup victories."
