Tragic Death Of Young Miller Gardner Shakes Baseball Community

The 14-year-old son of former Yankees player Brett Gardner passed away, leaving family and friends in mourning.

TAMPA — In a heartbreaking announcement that sent shockwaves through the baseball community, former New York Yankees outfielder Brett Gardner and his wife, Jessica, revealed the tragic passing of their youngest son, 14-year-old Miller Gardner. Miller died peacefully in his sleep on the morning of March 21, 2025, after falling ill while on a family vacation, which also left several other family members unwell.

"With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce the passing of our youngest son, Miller. He was 14 years old and has left us far too soon after falling ill along with several other family members while on vacation. We have so many questions and so few answers at this point, but we do know that he passed away peacefully in his sleep," the Gardners said in a statement released through the Yankees organization.

News of Miller's death broke on Sunday, March 23, and brought with it an outpouring of grief and support from the Yankees and across Major League Baseball. Yankees manager Aaron Boone spoke emotionally during a press conference, expressing his heartfelt sorrow for the Gardner family.

"We talk about being family all the time and even though Brett’s been gone for a few years, that doesn’t stop. A lot of people in there [the clubhouse] that know that family intimately. It’s a very tough day and very tough news," Boone stated, adding that he had not yet spoken to Gardner. "As best we can, we’ll be praying for the Gardner family and where we can, offering support. That’s kind of the unimaginable that unfortunately that’s where we are with it. Very sad. Very tough."

Sharing in the grief, Carlos Mendoza, the manager of the New York Mets, who has a history with Gardner from their playing days and recent coaching years, also paid tribute. "I had a really good relationship with [Gardner] and we’re thinking about him. The whole Mets organization is thinking about the Gardner family," Mendoza said while choked with emotion.

Miller was not just a beloved family member but also a promising young athlete. He played as a wide receiver and defensive back at Pinewood Prep in Summerville, South Carolina. Furthermore, he had an interest in baseball, where he excelled as an outfielder and pitcher. His family spoke of his passion for sports, saying he loved football, baseball, golf, hunting, fishing, and the time spent with family and friends.

The Yankees organization offered its condolences, acknowledging how Miller's passing resonated throughout the franchise. "Our hearts are heavy, and the Yankees family is filled with grief after learning of the passing of Miller Gardner. Words feel insignificant and insufficient in trying to describe such an unimaginable loss. It wasn't just Brett who literally grew up in this organization for more than 17 years — so did his wife, Jessica, and their two boys, Hunter and Miller," the Yankees stated.

Brett Gardner himself spent 14 fruitful years with the Yankees, during which he was part of the 2009 World Series-winning team and became a fan favorite. He was praised for his dedication to the sport and was named an All-Star in 2015. He played his last MLB game in 2021 before transitioning deeper into familial roles.

Miller’s passing serves as a stark reminder of life’s fragility. The Gardner family has expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support but also requested privacy during this incredibly difficult time.

As mourning continues within the MLB, both for the loss of a promising young life and the impact also hit close to home for many players, staff, and fans who were touched by the Gardners' profound connections over the years. It remains a time to honor the young boy's spirit and remember how he lived life to the fullest.

In a poignant moment reflecting the best of what sports can mean to families, the Gardner family remembers Miller not only for his interests in sports but also for his infectious smile that lit up the lives of those around him. It will be the lasting memories and love that keep his spirit alive in the hearts of everyone who had the privilege to know him.
