Tragedy Strikes U.S. Figure Skaters

A devastating plane crash claims the lives of 14 members of Boston's skating community as the nation mourns.

On January 30, 2025, the world of figure skating was plunged deep in sorrow following the devastating plane crash involving members of the U.S. Figure Skaking team. This tragic incident claimed the lives of 14 individuals, including skaters, coaches, and their family members, as their plane collided with a military helicopter before plunginginto the frigid waters of the Potomac River.

The flight, operated by PSA Airlines as part of American Airlines, was en route from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington D.C. when it collided with the Army Black Hawk helicopter, resulting ina catastrophic crash near the Ronald Reagan National Airport. Initial reports indicated no survivors among the 60 passengers and crew members onboard the aircraft, including three military personnel from the helicopter.

Doug Zeghibe, CEO of the Skting Club of Boston, revealed the heartbreaking details of the victims, emphasizing the close-knit nature of the skating community. “Skate is a very close and tightknit community. These kids and their parents —they are here at our skating facility in Norwood six, sometimes seven days a week,” he said. “It’s agreat big loss for all of us. We have lost family,” reflecting the additional loss felt by friends and families of the deceased.

The victims included two teenage skaters, Spencer Lane and Jinna Han, both of whom were at the forefront of their figure skating careers as Olympic hopefuls. Their mothers were also on board, along with the internationally renowned skating couple, Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, both prominent figures on the rink and beloved coaches.

Upon hearing the news, Kerrigan, who once graced the ice as one of the sport's top athletes, reflected on the gut-wrenching loss. Speaking at the Skting Club of Boston, she stated, “When you find out you know some of the people on the plane, it's an even bigger blow,” articulatng the personal connection many within the community felt toward the victims.

The impacts of this tragedy reached beyond mere numbers; Nancy Kerrigan, visibly shaken, expressed her grief and the pressing need for communal support. “You look at people going through tragedies, and you wonder, 'How do they do it?' I don't know. But we're so strong,” she remarked, urging those affected to lean on one another. “Somehow, we have a reservoir to dig from and I think we all would feel for the families,” she added, echoing the overall sentiment of mourning.

This incident also brought immense sadness to the family and friends of those lost. The grief-stricken community has been coming together to mourn, as tributes poured in from skaters and commentators alike. Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir opened the European Figure Skting Championships with heartfelt remembrances of the deceased, stating, “We are all hurting today.”

U.S. Figure Skting also issued statements acknowledging the loss, confirming, “their hearts are heavy as they grieve the talented athletes and beloved family members from the U.S. Figure Skting community.” The International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach also extended condolences, emphasizing the deep sorrow shared across national borders.

The Russian state media reported the involvement of several Russian skaters, including the Naumovs, reterting to their long-standing legacy within the figure skating world as champions and coaches. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed the loss, expressing solidarity with those affected.

Investigators are currently probing the circumstances surrounding the fatal collision, as both aircraft were maneuvering within what has been described as standard flight patterns before the accident. Fire and EMS Chief John Donnelly announced on Thursday morning the operation had recovered over two dozen bodies from the river, tragically underscoring the non-survivor status of this harrowing event.

This tragic incident inevitably draws parallels to the infamous 1961 plane crash, which took the lives of 72 individuals, including the entire U.S. Figure Skting team en route to the World Championships. Reflecting on their past, the sorrow of the current loss only amplifies the collective grief across generations within the figure skating community.

With every passing moment, it seems the pain of this loss grows heavier, marking another chapter of mourning within the tight-knit group of figure skaters and advocates who have devoted themselves to the sport. The aftermath of this tragedy leaves families and friends uncertain about the future, but they remain intertwined by their shared love for skating and remembrance of those taken too soon.

The community moves forward with the hope of healing over time, nurturing the friendships and bonds made over the years. Together, they hold tight to the memories of lost loved ones, recognize their legacy, and the indelible mark they've left behind on the sport and their beloved skating community.
