Toyota Launches New Alphard And Vellfire PHEVs

The automaker’s new models boost comfort and efficiency for luxury minivan enthusiasts.

Toyota is set to revolutionize its popular minivan lineup by adding Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) options for both the Alphard and Vellfire models. This exciting development was announced on December 20, with the official launch of the new six-seat PHEV slated for January 31, 2025. The new models promise to take the already luxurious offerings to greater heights with significant enhancements for comfort and environmental friendliness.

The new PHEVs will feature expanded electric driving capabilities, focusing on quieter operation and superior ride comfort by employing electric motors. Specifically, the models will leverage low vibrations from electric driving, enhanced by the spacious lithium-ion battery placed beneath the vehicle for stability during operation. This configuration also ensures drivers can operate these models with discretion during late-night scenarios, making them ideal for chauffeur-driven use.

Engine specifications show the PHEV versions will utilize a combination of 177 horsepower gasoline engine coupled with two electric motors: one boasting 182 horsepower at the front and another 54 horsepower at the rear. This E-Four system enables powerful acceleration, with the total system output reaching 306 horsepower. The hybrid models will achieve impressive fuel efficiency, rated at 16.7 km/L for the WLTC mode, though slightly less efficient than previous hybrids.

One of the standout features of the new PHEV system is its ability to operate air conditioning using electric power alone. This allows for comfortable waiting times for chauffeurs without needing to turn on the engine, resulting not just in savings, but also contributing positively to environmental concerns. According to Toyota's spokesperson, "The PHEV system will allow for many driving scenarios often utilizing EV driving, with a maximum EV range of 73km." This capacity supports the daily travel of chauffeur-driven users who can rely mostly on electric power.

Aside from the new PHEVs, Toyota has planned improvements for the current gasoline and hybrid Alphard and Vellfire models. Starting January 7, 2025, all existing units will come standard with upgraded features, including digital inner rearview mirrors equipped with front and rear dash cameras, which have become increasingly relevant for safety and monitoring. Further sound upgrades are to be expected, with JBL's premium sound system now available across several grades, maintaining the luxurious experience for passengers on long journeys.

The Alphard has also introduced additional configurations, including the new eight-passenger X grade to cater to larger families or groups, greatly enhancing its appeal. Early reactions from the market suggest remarkable interest, especially for its competitive pricing against luxury competitors. “Customers are excited about the new '8-passenger' X grade of the Alphard, which has garnered significant attention for its value to price ratio,” noted the Toyota spokesperson.

The paint finishes of the Vellfire models have not been overlooked, now featuring exclusive color choices including the newly introduced Precious Metal shade aimed at amplifying its aggressive aesthetics.

The market's reception of these new enhancements suggests Toyota is well-positioned to maintain its segment leadership within the minivan category. Social media reactions have been largely favorable, with many praising the affordability of the new '8-person' Alphard compared to alternative luxury options. This excitement showcases Toyota's commitment to delivering high-quality, environmentally conscious vehicle choices to its consumers.

With the new PHEV options scheduled for launch alongside thoughtful upgrades to existing models, Toyota is clearly banking on the potential for sustained interest among luxury minivan consumers. The combination of innovation, environmental responsibility, and competitive pricing is likely to resonate well, positioning the Alphard and Vellfire PHEVs as leading choices in the upcoming automotive marketplace.
