Squamish RCMP confirmed the retrieval of the second body of a victim whose home was engulfed by the mudslide last weekend near Lions Bay, approximately 40 kilometers north of Vancouver. Emergency crews, who had previously recovered the first body just days earlier, faced arduous conditions as they worked to reach the affected areas.
The mudslide struck during a powerful windstorm, one of several intense weather events to pummel B.C.'s south coast. Current weather conditions are under the watchful eye of Environment Canada, where peak winds were recently reported at Sartine and Solander Islands, measuring 132 km/h and 124 km/h respectively. These gusts have prompted wind warnings across the region, affecting locations such as Bella Bella and Klemtu, where gusts are expected to reach around 110 km/h.
This severe weather is part of what meteorologists describe as a "vigorous frontal system" sweeping through the region. The conditions could cause significant damage to buildings and result in widespread power outages. Previous forecasts indicated winds nearing 140 km/h just days prior on Vancouver Island, leaving communities bracing for the sustained impacts of relentless storms.
Weather condition records at Environment Canada confirmed alarming figures from various stations: 98 km/h at Bella Bella Airport, 93 km/h at the Pam Rocks station situated within Howe Sound, and 96 km/h at Sandspit Airport located on Haida Gwaii. With these data points, it is evident the latest storm system is one of the strongest seen this season, leading local authorities to continue vigilance as they monitor the situation.
