TLC Musical CrazySexyCool Aims For Broadway After D.C. Premiere

The jukebox musical about the iconic R&B trio will debut in 2026, telling their story of sisterhood and empowerment.

In an exciting development for musical theater enthusiasts, the upcoming jukebox musical about the iconic ’90s R&B group TLC, titled CrazySexyCool, is set to make its world premiere at Arena Stage in Washington D.C. next summer, with aspirations for a Broadway run following its debut. This production, which will run from June 12 to August 9, 2026, at the Kreeger Theater, promises to bring to life the captivating story of Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, and Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas, the Grammy-winning trio responsible for timeless hits like “Waterfalls,” “Creep,” “Unpretty,” and “No Scrubs.”

Written and directed by Kwame Kwei-Armah, known for his work on One Love: The Bob Marley Musical, the show aims to present a narrative that is both entertaining and deeply personal. Kwei-Armah’s vision is to highlight not just the music, but the powerful sisterhood that defined TLC’s journey through the ups and downs of fame. “Bringing this story to the stage is a dream come true,” said Watkins. “We have performed in a lot of different venues all over our career, but bringing our story and music to the theater is a totally new and exciting challenge.”

Choreography for the production will be led by Chloe O. Davis, who has a strong background in theatrical dance, having served as the associate choreographer for the current production of Gypsy. Her experience is expected to bring a dynamic energy to the musical, enhancing the storytelling through movement. “We have some of the best people in the business working on this project,” Thomas remarked. “Audiences will get to hear our story—mostly fact with a sprinkle of fiction—told in our own way, and of course it’s set to all your favorite hits!”

TLC, formed in Atlanta in 1990, quickly rose to fame, becoming the most successful female group of all time. They have sold over 95 million records worldwide and scored nine Top 10 hits, including four number-one singles. Their music not only topped charts but also empowered women, reshaping the landscape of R&B and pop music. The group’s influence continues to resonate, making the musical a timely celebration of their legacy.

The title CrazySexyCool is derived from the group’s double-platinum 1994 album, which won the Grammy for Best R&B Album and featured the hit “Creep.” This musical is not just a nostalgic trip down memory lane; it delves into the complexities of their lives, including the creative tensions and personal challenges they faced. Lopes’ tragic passing in 2002 during a car accident while filming a documentary in Honduras adds a poignant layer to the narrative.

Producer Bill Diggins emphasizes the importance of TLC’s impact on music and culture, stating, “TLC completely changed the game. Their music gave a voice to women everywhere, empowering them to be confident and unapologetic. But this isn’t just a story about the music; it’s about the sisterhood between these women and what kept them together through both unimaginable challenges and chart-topping success.”

As the musical gears up for its premiere, anticipation is building among fans of the trio and theatergoers alike. The tagline, “No scrubs. Just legends,” encapsulates the essence of TLC’s journey, celebrating their contributions to music while promising an engaging theatrical experience.

Audiences can expect a production filled with high-octane choreography and a powerhouse cast, aiming to tell a story that transcends the typical biographical musical. It will explore the fiery scandals, explosive creative clashes, and harrowing tragedies that marked TLC’s rise to fame, ultimately highlighting their resilience and the love that sustained their sisterhood.

With a focus on empowerment and authenticity, CrazySexyCool seeks to inspire a new generation while honoring the legacy of TLC. As the musical takes shape, it stands as a testament to the enduring power of their music and the bonds of sisterhood that defined their journey.

As the opening night approaches, the excitement surrounding CrazySexyCool continues to grow, and many are eager to see how this story of defiance, triumph, and love unfolds on stage. Whether you’re a longtime fan of TLC or new to their music, this musical promises to deliver an unforgettable experience that resonates with audiences of all ages.

In a world where stories of female empowerment are more critical than ever, CrazySexyCool aims to shine a light on the struggles and successes of three remarkable women who not only changed the music industry but also left a lasting legacy that continues to inspire.
